For the same reason that Nazi Germany banned guns in the '30s. Because right now, the second amendment is the only thing standing between the 'rats in Washington and We, the People.
Is there a way to enact idiot control? In primitive societies, they simply die a lot. In advanced societies, they breed and thrive, join together and destroy their society, and when life reverts to the primitive, they die a lot. Perhaps spending a winter in the wilderness as a rite of passage, like the Indians used to do?
Because every time something bad happens the government has to “do something”. Take away people’s right to defend themselves, steal from the productive to give from the leeches, etc. They can’t ever just leave people alone, they have to “do something” to show they earn their pay and that all the entitlement programs necessitate stealing more from the producers, and “do something” to take away the right of self-defense from the law-abiding while the law-breakers will still have the means to wreak havoc on society.
If one person (or a thousand) drives a car while intoxicated and kills someone, do we ban cars?
