Brown already bested one Democrat in 2009, and conceivably could again. The electorate is different in off-year and special elections from presidential elections.
Scott Brown may not win this time, but that's not a reason not to try. If he loses he loses, but there's no Republican with a better chance of winning than Scott Brown.
