Obama: I Met Republicans Halfway On Taxes, More Than Halfway On Spending

THE PRESIDENT: Good afternoon, everybody. Over the last few weeks I've been working with leaders of both parties on a proposal to get our deficit under control, avoid tax cuts -- or avoid tax hikes on the middle class, and to make sure that we can spur jobs and economic growth -- a balanced proposal that cuts spending but also asks the wealthiest Americans to pay more; a proposal that will strengthen the middle class over the long haul and grow our economy over the long haul.

During the course of these negotiations, I offered to compromise with Republicans in Congress. I met them halfway on taxes, and I met them more than halfway on spending. And in terms of actual dollar amounts, we're not that far apart.

As of today, I am still ready and willing to get a comprehensive package done. I still believe that reducing our deficit is the right thing to do for the long-term health of our economy and the confidence of our businesses. I remain committed to working towards that goal, whether it happens all at once or whether it happens in several different steps.

Remember back in the Republican primary debate when they were asked about raising taxes on the 1% if they were given a $10 spending cut per $1 tax increase? I thought the only answer to that question would have been “Show me the spending cuts in that amount and then we can talk.” Of course the moderator could’ve hypothesized any ratio he wanted, because he knew full well that no spending cuts would ever be offered!

What did ever happen to more spending cuts to tax increases ratio? How did Obummer get us to the point that we are at 50/50 with an additional stimulus spending bill added on the end...and yet, no deal is still the Republicans fault!?!?!?!?!?!?!

The senate voted on nothing so even if what Obama was telling the truth for the first time in his presidency his point would still be moot.

In any-event regardless of the values of the house republicans(Something I very much distrust) I feel having no federal Government better than sharing one with the likes of Obama and his despotic voters.

Let us be separate! Let us at last be free of theses selfish thieves, who see only value in the hard earned fruits of OTHER PEOPLE’s Labor.

There are a lot of Americans who believe this BS. And that’s because, at the end of the day, they want the easy way out. Hike taxes on “the rich” and don’t cut spending. And hope the problem goes away. Obama knows this.
