I take more after my Mother who was a kind and gentle soul. About as mild mannered and cooperative as a person gets. On the other hand she is a descendant of Scottish Warriors, one of whom killed a famous man.

I'vw heard the story that among the highlanders the women would hide the men's swords, both so that a local dispute would not turn to blood and also so when the English came raiding they would not find weapons and imprison their men as rebels.

But when there was just cause for an uprising, it was the women who would be pulling the battleaxes out of the wells and the swords from their hiding places in the thatch and laying them across their husbands' knees, bidding them to war.

Moral of the story, tick off a Scot and you'll get a drubbing, tick off a Scottish woman and the countryside will be drapin your innards on the heather for the crows' Sunday dinner...

Mother was so kind that at times it was difficult to believe.

She also had a soft spot for children. Her own of course but I have several times seen Mother drop a dime or nickel into the hand of a child who looked like they didn’t get many treats. She did it so no one would see but I did catch her a few times. Back then a dime was a lot of money.

Mother had an extraordinary love for her Parents, her Brothers and Sisters, and of course for her own children and husband. I was only 5 years old when Mother’s Daddy, Grandpa Mac. died. Mother went into a closet and began to ball. I was so upset that I ran into the closet beside her and began to cry too. One of my Sisters came and got me telling me it would just make her feel worse.

Mother was kind to people who were rude to her. The only time I saw her flash anger was when my Brother’s wife said something really mean and untrue about one of her children.

I hate the term “Steel Magnolia” but that does describe her.

She was the best person I ever knew.

Oboy, your comments about Scottish moms bring back memories of my mom and grandfather. Both very easygoing, but if they ever got their dander up, g-d help you.....

And good posting on the stories of the Highlander ladies :)

The English used arms control in Scotland after the ‘45, and sent the rebels off to another land as punishment ......

Didn’t work out quite as well as planned.

Won’t work out quite as well now either.....
