WASHINGTON (AP) — The powerful gun lobby is gauging enough support in Congress to block a law that would ban assault weapons, despite promises from the White House and senior lawmakers to make such a measure a reality.

Senators plan to introduce a bill that would ban assault weapons and limit the size of ammunition magazines, like the one used in the December shooting massacre that killed 27 people, most of them children, in Newtown, Conn. Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California has promised to push for a renewal of expired legislation.

-snip-

You don’t want to bet your house on the outcome. But I would say that the likelihood is that they are not going to be able to get an assault weapons ban through this Congress,” NRA president David Keene told CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., responded with a flat out “no” when asked on CBS’ ”Face the Nation” whether Congress would pass a ban on assault weapons.

Democratic West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, a lifelong member of the NRA has said everything should be on the table to prevent another tragedy like Newtown. But he assured gun owners he would fight for gun rights at the same time. “I would tell all of my friends in NRA, I will work extremely hard and I will guarantee you there will not be an encroachment on your Second Amendment rights,” Manchin said on ABC’s “This Week.”

Meanwhile, the NRA is working with the the WH to sell gun owners down the river in the interest of “common sense” gun control.

Yep

And they can stop Obamacare.
And Welfare Reform.
And the DREAM act.
And Ellena Kagan.

The game is rigged - but I’m sure we’ll win the next hand. :)

Why don’t we start referring to semi-auto rifles with 30-round magazines as assault prevention weapons, or assault deterrent weapons in all of our communications?

This should be the lingo used in all discussions, public and private.

I’ve started calling them Defense Rifles with the liberals I argue with. Once they realize what you’re doing they go from stunned to furious.

And instead of ‘gun rights’ I call it ‘right to self-defense’. And that’s true. The gun doesn’t have rights. I do. Liberals HATE it when you refuse their definitions and use better sounding ones.

Politically Correct speech can swing both ways. ;-)

Are you talking about the Bushmaster AR15 semi-auto center fire “Home Defender” ? :)

OK, Joe.

Put your money where your mouth is.

Let's have a repeal of the federal "Gun Free School Zones Act'

Let's have national recognition that the 2nd Amendment protects an individual right to carry weapons, and neither the States nor the Feds may infringe it.

Let's have a repeal of the interstate gun sales ban.

How 'bout that, Joe?

Is MORE FREEDOM 'on the table'?

“Assault Weapon” = any weapon that might be useful to have around for defense in the event that you are assaulted.

Initially, we heard an awful lot about Feinstein’s bill that she would be presenting “first thing” in the new session.

No way in heck was O'Dumbo was gonna let that old hag take his political capital out for a stroll. The issue was to be his and no crusty woman from California would be allowed to lead. Only Uncle-HairPlugs has the mental capacity to pull this off. AND he gets some face time in preparation for 2016!
