WASHINGTON - An influential group of business CEOs is pushing a plan to gradually increase the full retirement age to 70 for both Social Security and Medicare and to partially privatize the health insurance program for older Americans.

The Business Roundtable's plan would protect those 55 and older from cuts but younger workers would face significant changes. The plan unveiled Wednesday would result in smaller annual benefit increases for all Social Security recipients. Initial benefits for wealthy retirees would also be smaller.

Objecting to “Do as I say, not as I do” ain’t a Liberal or Conservative thang.

The government owns all sorts of things (e.g. equipment, weapons, land, mineral rights) that not only have commercial value but that they should not own.

These items must be sold and the easily calculable debt to the people that paid into Social Security all these years must be repaid.

Don't let them stiff us! Given the chance, they will declare bankruptcy and keep the assets.

I'll take 40 acres in Yellowstone Park and never complain.

People who are on disability S.S. receive Medicare automatically, two years after they become disabled and that applies to a whole lot of Americans.

Some of whom are legitimately disabled, but many who are not.

If we were allowed to save for our own retirement, instead of making mandatory contributions to an inefficient government program, we wouldn’t have to wait for the government to tell us when we could retire.

Another case for an FR 'Like' button. We put away a goodly percentage in our 401(k)s, but if I had the 12.4% from my and my employer's 'contributions', I would be able to retire easily years ahead of 70 or 67 or 65.

I am taking SS the very first day that I qualify at 62. I don’t need it and will have to pay tax on it but I paid in since 1969 and I’m taking it.

Give amnesty to the illegal aliens, raise the retirement age to 80 and tax ‘em til they drop. Welcome to the age of slavery.

There is a serious trend to reward illegal aliens, pay endless benefits to people who do not work, and now a move to force the productive people to work into old age.

Government is picking winners and losers. As a middle-aged white guy with a decent job, I am now one of life's losers.

That’s not a popular view on FR, but you are absolutely right. A defined benefit program funded by mandatory payroll taxes is just as you say: another form of welfare they’ve used to corrupt the populace into supporting an ever bigger and more intrusive, redistributive government.

I should have clarified.

If we could have control of the money we are currently paying into the bankrupt SS system, as well as all our own funds, then we would be in a better position to dictate our own retirement terms.

You know, I was going to immediately respond that to many screwing over Americans is just plain Patriotic, and the height of capitalistic integrity, but I knew someone would come along and do that for me.

I think this is a great idea even though I would get hit with it. The one caveat is that disability standards have to be tightened. Otherwise you are going to have a lot of suckers working until 70 to support people who can get on disability for bogus injuries.

Man what about the person 54...what a rip. I am 43 so it will affect me, but I always thought it is awful to be the next age when something changes.
