Seeing as how a semi-auto fires a single round per trigger pull, “semi-auto” and “single shot” can also be used interchangeably.

"Single-shot" is usually used in contrast with "repeating," or "magazine-fed," and is most commonly used with rifles like falling-block Sharps or break-open guns like a H&R Handirifle.

"Single shot" refers to loading each cartridge by hand, one at a time.
