Powell: GOP Should Back Off Attempts to Lower Voter Participation

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell says the Republican Party should abandon its efforts to curb voter participation through voter ID laws and restrictions on hours for early voting.

“Should we really have gone after reducing the turnout of voters in those places where we thought it would make a difference?” he told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program, referring to November’s election, Politico reports.

“The Republican Party should be a party that says, ‘We want everybody to vote,’ and make it easier to vote and give them a reason to vote for the party, not to find ways to keep them from voting at all.”

Powell says the Republican Party has turned much more conservative. “That’s perfectly acceptable, but if you stay that far to the right, you’re losing where the country is. “The country is moving more toward the center.”

He notes demographic changes as well. Minorities are growing as a portion of the population, particularly Hispanics. That’s a group that supported President Barack Obama by a whopping 71 to 27 percent margin last year.

“You have to appeal with policies and programs to these people who are going to be the leaders of our country in a generation,” Powell says.

As for voter participation, Florida GOP Gov. Rick Scott appears to have heard Powell’s message. He announced a plan last week to increase the number of early voting days and locations.

Voter participation is what powell calls voter fraud. I bet the dunce has not read anything about the subject. He’s just the black race socialist slogan man now.

BillyBoy: Powell Should Back Off Attempts To Claim Republican Party Membership

(especially since I've never seen "Republican" Colin Powell ever endorsed a Republican Party policy or campaign for a Republican Party candidate in his life)

Last week, I took some construction debris to the Orange County, Fl Landfill and was required, for the first time, to provide Photo ID to enter. Now, please tell me why photo id shouldn’t be required to vote. I’m very confused

We do want everyone who is ELIGIBLE, to vote. What we don't want are folks voting who are not citizens, or who are convicted felons, or who are trying to cheat by voting multiple times.

Colin Powell,

Thou hast repeatedly aligned with Marxists and Communists.

I care not what titles thou hast carried.

I care not what deeds thou hast performed.

Thou hast betrayed thy countrymen for the last time!

I DUB THEE TRAITOR!

May God have mercy on thy soul.

Remind me again.

When did the repubs ever attempt to deter those voters who are actually authorized to vote in a U.S. election from voting???

Did I miss something?

I mean, did the repubs load a bunch of rednecks in pickup trucks and then go around with their illegal magazines loaded to the gills with hollow point bullets to different polling places and then actually chase ANY voters away from the voting booth?

The irony of this is amazing. If Powell had been a midlevel officer when the democrats were in power he would have retired as an O-5 or O-6. Thanks to the repubs, he leapfrogged over 250 senior officers to gain the platform that he now pontificates from.

Colin, you are retired. Enjoy your sunset years, and keep your racist views to yourself.

...the Republican Party should abandon its efforts to curb voter participation through voter ID laws and restrictions on hours for early voting.

Early voting is one of the keys to modern Democratic party success. During the long early voting period they can round up every possible voter and deliver them to the polls, generating a turnout much higher than they would get on election day. And they can use early voting statistics and responses to telephone polls to determine if their propaganda is working.

We all know why Democrats are opposed to voter ID laws, since supposedly needing an ID impinges on your constitutional right to vote. Of course they never make the argument that needing an ID to purchase a firearm also impinges on your constitutional rights. So they really just want to enable anonymous voting.

Hey Colon,

The only way the GOP lowered voter participation was by nominating ANOTHER RINO.

Excuse me, but what are you even doing in this party??? You’re a DEMOCRAT.

As I recall, Benedict Arnold was also a graduate of West Point.
He, however, never verbalized his treason.

Colin, if you want to be a democRAT, just change your party affiliation. Time for the GOP to disinvite a few members.

QUESTION 1: Is ANYONE out there able to name a time where he actually criticized something about Obama or the Democrats, and without also a backhand slap at the Republicans?

QUESTION 2: If Joe Biden declared that he was a Republican tomorrow, would the media then put him up as the Republican spokesman to discuss the future of the Republican Party and its positions on critical issues?

If the answer to Question 1 is NO, then the answer to Question 2 is YES - and we should just feel lucky that Biden hasn’t yet come up with that strategy.
