President Obama defended the idea of entitlements like Medicare and Social Security in his second inaugural address Monday, arguing that these programs strengthen the nation and free Americans to "take the risks that make this country great."
"We reject the belief that America must choose between caring for the generation that built this country and investing in the generation that will build its future," Obama said. "For we remember the lessons of our past, when twilight years were spent in poverty, and parents of a child with a disability had nowhere to turn."
He continued: "We do not believe that in this country, freedom is reserved for the lucky, or happiness for the few. We recognize that no matter how responsibly we live our lives, any one of us, at any time, may face a job loss, or a sudden illness, or a home swept away in a terrible storm. The commitments we make to each other through Medicare, and Medicaid, and Social Security these things do not sap our initiative; they strengthen us. They do not make us a nation of takers; they free us to take the risks that make this country great."

“Just shut up and keep working hard and paying your taxes.
Those SS checks help me with my boat payments and greens fees.”
I know it seems hypocritical given what I’ve said on this thread, but I’m on SSI disability and I only work under-the-table so I can qualify for and EBT card all so I can keep you from getting knee-replacement surgery on Medicare. I don’t want you to be able to enjoy the golf and hopefully you’ll be miserable on your boat, too.
You have the advantage of knowing 25 years ahead of time you're going to get screwed.
How arrogant of you to PRESUME to tell another Freeper what is or is not ‘of concern’ to them! Is there a time limit on posting responses as well? I am ENTITLED to express my opinion on ANY and ALL threads the I consider of interest to me. It is this very ATTITUDE that is becoming more prevalent on FR every day- people telling others to basically ‘shut up’. Jim Rob- are you listening?
I WILL post to any thread- AT ANY TIME- I please-and until there are rules by the site OWNER re. time limits on opinions-you are wasting your time trying to silence me.
So you think Social Security is the same as welfare? How very liberal of you-practically the Democratic party line. Those ‘devalued’ 60’s and 70’s dollars were hard EARNED and paid into the system. Welfare recipients have not contributed ANY of the funds they are receiving. Am I to assume, then, that you think Social Security should be stopped before welfare-just let the old people die? Colorado-eh? Didn’t some elected official from your state just come out and say just that- that the elderly have a responsibility to hurry up and die because they are draining the system?
Do you suggest forced euthanasia- or simply slow starvation? How about funding S.S. and cutting the salaries of all politicians-oh, and STOP sending foreign aid to our enemies? I’ll have no more to say on this- but YOU are not going to tell me what I can express an opinion on, or when!
What do you have in your bag for me today Barry Claus?
Correction: it was recently mentioned by Hillary Clinton that Colorado’s ex Governor Lamm said the elderly had a duty to die- the quote was from 1984, the mention of it in the news was recent.
Evidently that opinion of the elderly is popular in Colorado and is supported by the current government in Washington. Lamm was 48 when he said it- he would be 77 now- wonder how he feels about all this ‘disposability of the elderly’ talk now?
( Just wanted to clarify my last post)
Give it a minute. The meds should kick in any time now.
The government doesn’t pay me anything, unlike you I actually work for a living.
You are a liberal troll, and really not worth the time it took to post this last response.
You are a child, attempting to sound so grown up, but you’re not. Actually you’re kinda sad, pitiful even.
Yawn
