Criminal charges weighed in Newtown deaths (sandy hook massacre)

HARTFORD -- The prosecutor investigating the Newtown school massacre told a new panel Thursday not to expect a final report on the Dec. 14 slaughter anytime soon.

Danbury State's Attorney Stephen J. Sedensky III announced that while no criminal prosecution seems likely to emerge from the mass murder and suicide, he wants to suppress much of the evidence from the public anyway.

"This is an ongoing criminal investigation, for which I have obtained extensions of time from the Superior Court to keep documents sealed, so that the investigation may continue unencumbered by distractions," Sedensky said.

"The rules of professional responsibility for prosecutors require that I take steps to prevent publicity that would have a substantial likelihood of materially prejudicing a potential prosecution," he said.

In a brief appearance before Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's 16-member Sandy Hook Advisory Commission, Sedensky said that he expects the State Police report on the shootings to be several months away.

"Of course, if the investigation reveals that there should be a criminal prosecution, then that prosecution would take precedence over any report," Sedensky told the panel of municipal officials, mental health experts, security professionals and social-service providers.

"Though no such prosecution currently appears on the horizon, I am sure you can appreciate that all leads need to be investigated and evidence examined before final decisions and statements are made," he said.

He offered to meet privately with a representative of the advisory panel to provide information that he might not release to the public.

Sedensky said that during the first week after the shootings, federal, state and local police worked around the clock investigating the crime scenes at Sandy Hook Elementary School, at the 36 Yogananda St. home of Nancy Lanza, whose son Adam, 20, murdered her before driving her car to the school, and elsewhere.

It will be months before a report is released.

"We are hoping for some time this summer, perhaps in June," said Sedensky, a Newtown resident, adding that details on the mental health of Adam Lanza, are protected from disclosure under privacy regulations and might not be able to be provided to the commission.

Bill Ritter, the former governor of Colorado whose district attorney of Denver investigated the aftermath of the 1999 shootings at Columbine High School in Littleton, told the panel the nation is watching.

"You could wind up saving lives at some point in the future," said Ritter, who later became governor and became a target for a deranged gunman who was shot and killed by a state trooper outside his office. "Healing can happen" but it can be a long-term process.

Richard Bonnie, a professor at the University of Virginia School of Law who was an adviser to the Virginia Tech Review Panel following that 2007 shooting, warned that legislation and regulatory changes can be affected by emotions.

"Tragedy can compromise thoughtful policy making," he said from Virginia.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, in the panel's first meeting Thursday morning, said that the consequence that seems to be separating Newtown from other mass shootings is that momentum for a positive outcome to the crime seems to be gaining every day, not fading.

"We must take a serious look at public safety, particularly school safety, so our children can grow up and go to school without the fear of violence in a culture that does in fact glorify violence," Malloy said.

"We need to have a discussion about stopping that," Malloy said. "The recommendations you will craft over the coming weeks and months will no doubt take us toward that goal: better mental health, better safety in our schools and a system that is set up to stop the glorification of the violence."

Later in the afternoon, after Sedensky's testimony, Malloy, a former prosecutor, was asked by reporters about the reticence to release more details of the shooting.

"I think there's always this situation where a prosecutor is trying to make the right balance," Malloy said.

"This was an attack so outrageous, in the killing of 20 six-year-olds that in many ways it's going to have an imprint, the likes of which I can remember where I was, in the classroom, when someone came in to say President Kennedy was shot," Malloy said. "I think this is that kind of event. So I think he needs to take the time necessary to conclude the investigation. Having said that, I would hope that as little time is necessary. It's more important to get it right than to rush out a report."

On Friday morning, a legislative subcommittee looking into issues of school security after the Sandy Hook shootings will hold a public hearing starting at 9:30 a.m. in Room 2-C of the Legislative Office Building in Hartford.

Nope — that photo is taken from the left which hides things to the left of what you are looking at behind that brick wall.

Police or the shooters? Both stories are out there. There is the interview with the mothers who ‘just notice’ the shot out window. So that implicates the shooter(s). Other MULTIPLE sources ay the police. So, again, which is it?

The CNN overhead is not from the day of the shooting apparently. Later in the clip they show a military air conditioned/heated tent in front of the school with morning lighting. Clearly this is from the day after.

The clip shows an oval hole in the glass. The rest of the glass is in the frame but shattered. What you expect from tempered glass. The size of the glass meant it definitely was tempered - of that there is no doubt. You can not have that large a pane without it being tempered. But it would not seem ‘bullet-proof’ at all.

To create the oval patter one would have to shoot in a circular motion with some pretty good accuracy to basically cut through the tempering film. Doable. But by a 20 year with some minimum experience with the weapon?

So now there is a question of who AND when. Who - shooter(s), police? Still not clear. When - during the incident, after the incident, overnight?

But the pane is not shattered in the running photo. The young girl shows up in apparently her dads arms in other photos. So like a lot of other children she (and small subset of children) shows up in multiple photos at the scene even though there were supposed to be over 400 children there.

Just continued strangeness.....

Physical risk of shooting 556 from 223 only rifle....different pressures due to different projectile.

Firing a 556 from a 223 only is putting the shooter in danger.

I’m listening to one of the high priests of the conspiracy theorists now, Mike Powers, and he is saying that there was no 911 call ever made that morning.

He didn't say that at all...Why are you giving false information...Powers said there was only ONE 911 call...Even the people who heard the gunshots didn't bother to call...

And Powers DID NOT SAY that the pane of glass next to the door was never broken...

<>And Powers DID NOT SAY that the pane of glass next to the door was never broken...<>

I guess you missed this part of his tape:

“As far as the weapon is concerned, gaining access to the school. I have a picture that shows the front of the school, with all the glass being intact. When you listen to the dispatchers initial report to the first responding officers, they believe the front glass has been broken out and they are unsure why. Not shot out. The picture that I have in my possession now, is a Connecticut police officer, escorting 2 women and a child away and you can clearly look over his shoulder and see another officer standing there at the entrance with the carbine and all the glass is still intact.”

What do those words mean to you???

Why are you giving false information and defending a guy doing the same???

You're right he does say there was only ONE 911 call but he is mistaken on that as well.

9:35:53 a.m. - Dispatch: “Sandy Hook School, Caller’s indicated she thinks someone is shooting in the building.”

9:36:15: “The individual I have on the phone is continuing to hear what he believes to be gun shots.”

Two separate 911 calls for sure -- one from female and the other from male.

And there may have been more, including the nurse who called 911 after shooter had killed the principal and the psychologist, and would not have used the words "believes" and "thinks" at that point.

I certainly missed Powers stating this part of what you just posted...

I didn't hear Mike Powers say that...Where exactly on the recording is it???

I don’t think that they make the 911 calls to the police public, so the best we are going to get is the police scanner traffic and that was published the same day it happened.

Boy you really are out of touch.

Yes there is a Church of Satan in the area

Look it up.

The Diocese for Bridgeport covers that entire area. Egan , the person who was in charge of that Diocese has gone on record saying he doesn’t think there is a problem exposing children to known child molesters

Furthermore, there is quite a history of Child Molesting in that area.
Have you bothered to look.

One of the child molesting Priests who Egan has been warned about and who had been thrown out of a seminary for not being suitable to be a Priest ended up as Priest in the same Church as little boy Lanza.

Yes, there was certainly a ring of Bridgeport DIOCESE Child MOlesting Priests.

Oh and there is an interesting article back in the 90s about that area being known for Satanism.

Wonder how that came about.

“Adam Lanza was the victim of a Pedophile Catholic priest.

A. There is no evidence that the Lanza family were Catholic, that Adam ever attended a Catholic school or had any contact with any Catholic priests, live alone one from Bridgeport.

YES THERE IS
You just aren’t paying attention.

Lanza went to St Rose of Lima when he was a boy.

He also went to that Church’s school.

And yes, there was a Child Molesting Priest there when Lanza was a boy.

Do the research.

here let me help you out since you seem incapable.

John Castaldo.

It is unlikely that he stopped molesting at St Rose of Lima.

He was just that disturbed.

You just run with your conspiracy theory nonsense, darlin’.

You’ve amply proven the adage “you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.” I only have so much time and am done leading.

You claimed your friend knew guns.

Were the casings 5.56 as you claim or not?

YES OR NO

You’ve been informed of my last answer to you. You run along now and cease pinging me. It is obvious you have not read and/or comprehended what has been placed in front of you in this thread, for whatever reasons.

I’m done.
