The snowbird smackdown is part of a larger Dayton tax grab proposing to lift Minnesota's personal income tax rate to 9.85% from 7.85% on income above $150,000 for singles and $250,000 for joint filers. Congrats to midlevel corporate types in Edina—the Governor says you're rich. Minnesota's income tax rate would be the country's sixth highest.

These people can just put their Minnesota house up for sale and live full time in a warmer state.

Sounds like a bit of “ethnic cleansing” of the productive.

Good friend of mine once lived in Minnesota, and he called attitudes like this one “the Minnesota stink.”

Check the stats and you find that the fastest growing states are the low tax states.Even in Communist New England,New Hampshire (no income tax...no sales tax) is growing by leaps and bounds while the rest of the region is going down in flames.

He’s going to be lonely all by himself when people there finally wake up and decide not to take this kind of abuse any more!

So instead of getting some tax revenue he will get nothing.

And then complain that it is not fair...

The obviously wealthier tax base, who already have shown that they are unusually mobile are not the ones to target for taxes. Within a year, they will simply find another cold state to summer over in, like Alaska that PAYS you to live there.

Hard to run a welfare state with no tax base Gov...

But the obvious takes longer to discover for the obtuse.

As the blue states increasing fail financially, they jack up taxes and fees in a futile attempt to catch up.

Important electoral states like California, Illinois, and NY will undoubtedly get federal bailouts of some sort. But a state like Mn is SCREWED.

I heard on Rush today that DC has floated the idea of seizing 401k and IRA accounts and paying out a ‘dividend’ to the former owners.

There’s a word for that.

Several, actually.

That's insane!

But I remain conflicted about snowbirds, here in Florida.

Some of them are the very ones who foolishly “fouled their nests” in northern states, and then they move here and try their damndest to mess up ours!

OTOH, many of them are normal, sane people who have finally managed to partially escape from the places they were born. Those snowbirds are welcomed with open arms!

Personally, I refuse to travel north of I-10 ever again!

If I had a Wisconsin realestate brokers license I’d be going up in that Minnesota back country hustling land to weekenders to move to Wisconsin. Most of those weekend homes are either mobile or prefabs and can be transported across the state line easily. Those updere counties would have -——for a tax base once they split.

Utah has a property tax premium for snowbirds. Full-time residents get a 45% property tax reduction, while part-time residents do not. Since property taxes fund schools and part-time residents do not use schools, this has always seemed unfair to me. But it has been upheld in court.

This brings to mind Phil Gramm’s favorite saying about taxes.

Don’t tax you, Don’t tax me. Tax that fellow behind the tree.

Does this idiot realize they will just stay in the low tax states they run to in the winter depriving him of ALL tax revenue they might have given the state while living here? I didn’t think so.
