Washington Examiner cuts 87 jobs, drops local news

The Washington Examiner is dropping local news coverage, cutting 87 jobs and changing into a weekly magazine and daily website focused on political news.

Denver-based Clarity Media Group Inc., which owns the Examiner, as well as The Weekly Standard, said the Examiner will continue to be published daily through June 14. A new website will be introduced June 17, and the first issue of the weekly comes out June 20.

A company spokesman said the 87 jobs being eliminated are across the board, in the newsroom, advertising and other business side jobs.

"Many of the business and editorial positions needed to publish a local daily newspaper are not required as we move to focus on national and political coverage," said Clarity Media President Ryan McKibben."The employees being laid off should be proud of their achievements in creating The Washington Examiner, and Clarity is grateful for the role they have played in giving the Examiner the strong presence it has in Washington."

Examiner Editor Stephen G. Smith is staying on to launch the new publication, as are Executive Editor Mark Tapscott and Jennifer Peebles, managing editor of digital content.

Several executives on the business side will remain as well, Clarity said, without disclosing a specific number.

The reorganization will also create 20 new jobs for both digital operations and the weekly publication.

The new publication will target a readership that includes government, public affairs, advocacy, academia and political professionals in Washington and state capitals. It will provide news, investigative reporting and commentary on national legislation and policy, the company said.

Pity, as the Examiner had a really good "local" section.

Bad news. The Examiner had good local coverage, good columnists, and a pretty good sports section. Hopefully, some of those folks will land at the Times or even the Post, (You know that Weymouth once worked at the Times.)

The examiner was the paper I grabbed first when getting on the Metro. ONline, I doubt I will read it much, except the million posts they send me in Facebook.
