And if you count your shots you can drop the magazine with a live round in the chamber to take care of anyone that rushes you while you reload.
I learned that little trick from cops who used to use .45 Colt pistols and others without a magazine disconnect.
As for rifles, same goes since they don’t have magazine disconnects.

During WWII it was standard procedure among soldiers to eject a partially used clip and reload with a full 8 rounds.
Would not want to use five or six rounds, then later, during a firefight have to use the last two or three, then “ping” and have to reload under fire.
