No matter what Saddam did or was reported to have done be it invading Kuwait, attacking the USS Stark, slaughtering the Kurds, developing WMD’s or being a general bad boy pain in the a$$ the nail in his coffin that did him in was forming an Oil Bourse. All the other activities were just side shows for public consumption so as to make it easier for the voters wrap their minds around military action against Saddam. When Saddam showed he wanted a Bourse(commodities exchange) where oil was bought and sold in Euros that was the final straw and I believe real reason for Saddam being taken out. That would have threatened the Petrodollar stability and by default the status of the USD as the worlds reserve currency. When ever world reserve currency status (USD) is threatened the reaction is relatively quick and lethal.

For an example of a country whose currency does not have reserve status and is denominated in something other(USD) than it's national currency and spends like a drunken sailor running up enormous debt till it can't be serviced look at Argentina. Once the IMF cut off credit Argentina defaulted and collapsed.

Right now we are some what similar with enormous debt but having the advantage of being the worlds reserve currency and having a very good ,albeit somewhat smaller than in previous times, military.

Once the USD looses reserve status we eventually go Argentina. So when Saddam posed a threat to the Petro dollar it was time for him to go. Saddam started to deal Oil for euros in the fall of 2000 and was being kicked out in 2003
