Alaska Rep. Don Young rebuked over slur

WASHINGTON - One of the House of Representatives’ longest-serving Republicans now says he meant “no disrespect” when he used the term “wetbacks” to describe migrant workers his family once employed. His comment, which drew a strong rebuke from the House speaker, flies in the face of his party’s effort to improve outreach to minority groups.

“Wetbacks” is not a slur. It’s just a descriptive term for those who came here illegally by swimming the Rio Grande. Most “Mexican-Americans” (a real slur against those who consider themselves unhypenated Americans) probably view the term as a compliment to the dedication of those who had the courage to “take the plunge.”

Yes, Los Mojados (the Wet Ones) are held in high esteem by Mexican nationals. So, the next time you encounter a group of young people who appear to have Mexican ancestry, tip your hat to them and to their heritage by asking them if they are genuine wetbacks.
