WASHINGTON - One of the House of Representatives longest-serving Republicans now says he meant no disrespect when he used the term wetbacks to describe migrant workers his family once employed. His comment, which drew a strong rebuke from the House speaker, flies in the face of his partys effort to improve outreach to minority groups.

Sigh.

The government’s crackdown on illegal immigration during Pres. Eisenhower’s administration was called “Operation Wetback.”

Until I saw that his dad was in California, I was impressed that folks would swim the Beeing strait for work in Alaska.

But then he has to grovel and say he’s ‘sorry.’
Bullcrap!
They are, indeed, wetbacks, or a reasonable facsimile thereof.

Right. And the government got rid of every known alien and shipped them back over the border.

Perhaps we should boycott ‘Mexican’ restaurants. If no gringo is eating their tacos they might have to retreat back over the border unless the Mexican government has erected a fence.
What we get in the US are the dregs of Mexican and South American ‘society’.

Yeah, but then you’d have to get the TSA involved. I don’t think anyone else is allowed to do that kind of check.

“Wetbacks” is not a slur. It’s just a descriptive term for those who came here illegally by swimming the Rio Grande. Most “Mexican-Americans” (a real slur against those who consider themselves unhypenated Americans) probably view the term as a compliment to the dedication of those who had the courage to “take the plunge.”

On the Wikipedia page, it is only a slur in English, not Spanish. I am NOT kidding.

I prefer “crimalien” for those who came here illegally.

Yes, Los Mojados (the Wet Ones) are held in high esteem by Mexican nationals. So, the next time you encounter a group of young people who appear to have Mexican ancestry, tip your hat to them and to their heritage by asking them if they are genuine wetbacks.

Watched an old Pinky and the Brain classic from ‘93 — Brainy the Pooh. Is offensive by today's standards and would probably be banned.
I especially loved Algore the Donkey. And Bea Arthur — the scariest bee in the hive.
