And we should drop the fantasy that the only worthwhile job is a tech job. Blue collar jobs should be something to be proud of.

Yep. You'd be amazed how fast someone in the tech/political/education/bureaucratic/entertainment industries can't WAIT to meet my hubby when the stuff that's supposed to be going down in the toilet starts coming UP in the bathtub!

LOL!

I don’t know with the advent of the Internet, how you could have stopped anything that produced a product that is stored in a digital format, from being outsourced, without employing extremely draconian methods.

“Jobs Americans Won’t Do” according to one privileged class dunce who rode his father’s name to the Presidency.

Part of the reason these kids remain jobless is because they enroll in majors like Philosophy, French Literature, or Gender Studies, peppered with BS electives.

Ok, you gotta be shitting me lumping Philosophy in as a BS degree... you are aware that most philosophy courses are only a few courses removed from a Mathematics degree, right?

There should be no surprise they’re still living with Mom and Pop and collecting carts at the local supermarket for minimum wage, while not being taken seriously by any professional HR recruiter.

I dunno, I have a BS in CS -- and the jobs aren't exactly falling at my feet; this despite having a bit of a desire to work with Ada (used commonly in Aerospace, nuclear, and other safety-critical fields -- and not a common line-item on CS grad's resumes) though some is likely due to not having "6 years of experience and a top secret clearance."

And yet I STILL hear that you can’t live well without a degree. Not that I have a degree, not am I living well, but it seems pointless when you are fighting for less jobs available.

Lumping Philosophy in as a BS degree...

Oh, it's a "BS" degree, alright.

There’s a paper trail. There is still enforcement of software “piracy” and using more than the number of licenses of software on site (say you have 12 licenses but have it installed on 16 computers, you are in violation).

Bill Gates and his bought the legislation they wanted. We are talking about BILLIONS of dollars worth of software imported without paying import duty.

My job salary was reduced far below the “going wage” for my field because it was cut to compete with outsourced labor that was also being used. I was below norm already when they cut my salary by one third. Companies prefer US labor but they don’t want to pay for it.

Some IBM exec a few years ago advised Americans to go work in India because you won’t be paid as much but your wages will go farther.

Screw the suits who grab up the savings in salaries for hefty bonuses.

Desk jobs sitting at a computer have also been sent abroad (with the finished results smuggled into the country with no import duty paid). Whether it is graphic design (laying out ad circulars for the weekly grocery store ads, simple legal document preparation, or quality assurance testing of software and development of programming code and webpages).

I'm thinking that's pretty true: I'm a programmer and hideously underemployed (maybe 18 hrs/mo sub-subcontracting).

Heck, even customer service jobs are gone to India or somewhere.

My friend got out of construction labor (welding) to open his own barber shop. After running things for 2 years (collecting from those who have chairs there) he’s seeking his own barber license as well.

Hair always grows (unless we have to deal with radioactive fallout).

Mike Rowe gives one of the greatest speeches on what America needs that was ever given.

>> can’t get a job cause us old guys can’t afford to retire...

>Ain't that the truth! I like my job, but instead of winding things down at 65, I figure I have to keep going just to stand still, financially. Bop 'til you drop!

The economy in the shape it's in now doesn't help either -- employers can take advantage of the situation by basically saying "you're lucky to have a job, if you don't do X [as unpaid overtime] you won't be so lucky."

I like this line from the story ...

“...for example, you reached Level 60 on World of Warcraft, tell your future boss why that means you have monster leadership skills.”

Are you kidding me!

This to me means the kid wastes his time playing vidio games and will probably do the same if you were to hire him/her.

Yet it is the liberals’ and Obama’s goal for everybody to go to college. They just want to indoctrinate them until they’re 26. There simply are not enough jobs for college grads now, imagine if “everybody” goes to college?

Well, in this economy, mine grows longer and longer in between cuts.

If I had the money, I would go into the funeral business. People always die.

Problem with my generation is they were/are indoctrinated to think that certain jobs are beneath them by the older generation. Also doesn’t help that most employers want someone who is ready made for a position with no training. Job searching is a catch 22 in a lot of cases. You have to have x years experience in x industry to get an entry level job.

There are useful suggestions to be made, unfortunately this article doesn’t make any of them.

Only to those who don't understand what philosophy is.

But, in any case, I see you did not address my personal observation: a non-"bull" degree, with a fairly rare skill, and no real interest garnered by employers.
