I’ve been interested in getting a .45-70 guide gun for a while, but I hear such mixed reviews of the quality in the current rifles being produced that I’ve been holding off.

I got a .45-70 1895 quite a few years ago. Great rifle and a lot of fun to shoot. I put a 2x scout scope on it which makes for a nice, easy to aim package. I avoided the Guide Gun mostly because, at that time, it was only available with a ported barrel IIRC. Had a ported barrel on a .223 Contender and hated it.

I am looking for something lighter to carry when backpacking in areas where I’m not at the top of the food chain. I have an old (but in very good condition) Ruger number 3, but I would like something with more than one shot.

This article is from 2011, not 2013.

Ive got a early 90's version of the 45/70 - excellent gun - though the round sinks quickly around 150 yds - use the 325 grain, because the 420 something kicks like a mule

The action is like silk - nothing sloppy

>>What make & model is it?

It’s a Marlin 1894. I’ve always lusted after one. A part of me has always admired the cowboy and rancher, and I’ve long owned a .44 mag sidearm. If I were a cowboy/rancher it just seems proper that I’d have one of these in my saddle to go with the pistol.

Me too. A shame really. By the time they get the quality of the stocks and metal up to snuff, Maryland will declare them banned assault rifles...

I used to live 5 minutes down the road from this facility. Makes me sad.

I had one of those (not stainless) until my nephew traded it for heroin. I had let his dad use it for deer season.

I think a backdoor way to make it easier for govt to control business is through consolidation of companies. The fewer companies there are, the easier to control.

I’ve never understood the wisdom of taxing businesses. Talk about killing the goose that lays the golden eggs...

If your nephew survived his addiction and reached productive member of society status you could send him a link to the stainless model and tell him it would square you if he bought you one.

I was going to say “if he surprised you” with one, but I guess being surprised by a drug addict with a gun may not be the best way to put it. :)
