Babies' Herpes Linked To Circumcision Practice By Brittany Brady April 7, 2013
Two infants diagnosed with herpes after ultra-Orthodox Jewish circumcision ritual.
In it, the person performing the circumcision sucks blood away from the baby's penis Most adults carry HSV-1 virus; health department says it can be deadly for babies The metzitzah b'peh ritual is practiced by relatively small number of ultra-Orthodox Jews
Editor's note: The content of this story may disturb some readers. New York (CNN) -- Two more infants have contracted the herpes virus after undergoing an ultra-Orthodox Jewish type of circumcision, which has been linked to the spread of the potentially deadly virus to newborn boys, according to the New York City Health Department.
In the ritual, known as metzitzah b'peh, after removing the foreskin of the penis the person performing the procedure places his mouth briefly over the wound, sucking a small amount of blood out, which is discarded. Antibacterial ointment is applied and the wound is bandaged. The health department says the procedure is dangerous because the contact with the mouth could transmit diseases such as herpes.
Most adults are infected with the herpes simplex virus type 1, and while they may have no symptoms, the virus may be present in their saliva, according to the health department. (It is different from herpes simplex virus type 2, which is usually transmitted sexually.)
"While HSV-1 in adults can cause the common cold sore, HSV-1 infection in newborns is very serious," a department statement says.

Primitivism
Well,,,, better than Herpes Simplex Type 10!
Sorry ‘bout that! But everytime I hear “Herpes Simplex” I think of the Murphy quote in “Beverly Hills Cop.”
Doesn’t sound very hygienic for sure.
Sick, uncouth freaks. Paedophiles, too.
Just a coincidence, I'm sure.
Circumcision has worked over 3,000 years in less than modern sterile ultra-Orthodox Jewish circumcision ritual. It seems it ultimately safer than an Aboritiorium.
totally disgusting
There is absolutely, positively NO DIFFERENCE between:
Herpes 1 and Herpes 2
They are the EXACT same virus.
Unfortunately, due to a special needs grand daughter, I am VERY much an expert on this subject.
What is the reasoning behind performing a metzitzah b’peh, as opposed to a “regular” brit milah? Can someone with some knowledge of Hebrew tell me what is exactly that is mentioned in Gen 17?
Another thing on my list to worry about at 70.
Found an old one (Quite a number of FR search PAGES on "circumcision ...)
From 2005: HEALTH BIG: IT'S JUST NOT RITE (NYC govt vs. mohels giving herpes to baby boys)
FWIW, the thread does bring up challenges to the accuracy of the Health Commissioner's assertions regarding the facts (in 2005).
Yeah! 13 cases / 20,493 infants is .06 % but read a little the orthodox sued "Several Jewish groups and three rabbis filed a lawsuit in federal District Court in Manhattan arguing that "the government cannot compel the transmission of messages that the speaker does not want to express -- especially when the speaker is operating in an area of heightened First Amendment protection, such as a religious ritual."
It is for the children that we need to give up constitutional rights ...cough (sandyhook)
Wonder what the statistics will look like when traditional family is completely destroyed?
Brit Milah is Biblically-mandated circumcision. Metzitzah sh'baal peh is an additional procedure that is performed at the end of some Brit Milot. It involves using the mouth to suck blood from the wound, supposedly to clean it.
It is not required by the Bible, or by Jewish law. Instead, it emerged more than a thousand years ago as a "hygienic" practice, with the belief that it reduced the risk of infection to the baby. Obviously, our medical knowledge of 1500 years ago was pretty bad. So, as modern medicine discovered that metzizah sh'baal peh wasn't beneficial, but actually harmful, most Jews stopped doing it. Today, nearly all Jews reject the practice - including most Orthodox Jews.
But there are a few extremists running around, who trust the wisdom written down in books long ago over modern medicine. They keep doing it.
13 cases is 13 cases too many. In my mind, this isn't a religious freedom issue, because no sane Rabbi would say that metzizah sh'baal peh is religiously required. At most, it's a custom based on outdated medical knowledge.
On the contrary, nearly every Orthodox Rabbi would say that it's prohibited, because it's an unnecessary risk to life.
0.06% is a level of infection you would expect for infection at birth. If the Rabbi’s don’t change their practice as you say “On the contrary, nearly every Orthodox Rabbi would say that it’s prohibited, because it’s an unnecessary risk to life.” then they operate contrary to their belief. That being said I think that the government micromanagement aspects of domestic and religious life determined by some elitist, is more dangerous to children’s lives.
Thanks!
