My new one just arrived, I just have to put it together.
And no Windows 8 either. Ubuntu and Windows 7.

Government purchases of desktops and laptops are way off this year despite the fact that government is spending more money than ever before.

It's because people are just too stupid to realize how great Windows 8 and Bill Gates relly are.
The Microsoft salesmen & vendors will find this thread shortly and will claim just that

Looking back and not that far back, this is a Steve Jobs revolution. The iPhone and iPad were revolutionary devices that have upset the Microsoft and the desktop PC “Apple Cart”.

Not at all. That would be like saying that TV made radio obsolete or that pick up trucks made freight trains obsolete.
Last year, 75 million desktop units were sold in the U.S. That is about the same number sold WORLD-WIDE in 1996, when PCs were already a common household item.
Are desktop PCs needed for casual browsing? No. But they are still needed for lots of real work. I find it more likely that the home comm. device of the future could still well be a desktop PC hooked up to a monitor, replacing the TV. Now THERE is a buggy whip industry on the horizon.

Hardware has out paced software for a number of years now. Even a 5 year old system can run most popular applications with ease. Most people in a tough economic climate don’t see a need to upgrade.

My laptop is just perfect for me. I don't need no stinkin miniature on my person at all times. I don't need to be tracked 24/7. My cell phone is on only when I need it. I am okay with not being tethered to the world all the time.

Windows 8 not only failed to provide a positive boost, but also appears to have slowed the market.
I'm keeping my Windows XP computer and I'm going to build a new PC with Linux.
I'm old school,,,I still have a TRS-80, C-64 and KAYPRO (a portable computer, the size of a briefcase) around.
along with a picture next to an IBM computer circa 1958.

I’ve been using Windows 8 for a couple of months now. It works very well! There is an add-on called “Classic Shell” that gives back the Start button. Once in the desktop, you can not tell the difference between Windows 7 and Windows 8.

In another sign of the worldwide shift in preferred personal devices, PC shipments posted the steepest decline ever in a single quarter, Tablets are PCs, and many have more capabilities than many desktops had only a few years back. Some percentage of PC users will move to tablet PCs, then a point will be reached where the much smaller screen sizes and other factors will cause many users to stick with desktops for the long term.
Desktops, laptops, notebook PCs and tablets serve mostly the same functions. Smartphones are something new, but it remains to be seen how many will use them as their only computer platform.

Microsoft has done themselves and the PC industry a horrible disservice. Let’s say:
50% (high in my opinion) of the people in the market for a PC get a Windows 8 machine and like it,
40% of them get a Windows 8 machine and don’t like it (my situation), while
10% of them delay getting a new PC because they’ve heard bad reviews/experience concerning Windows 8, and almost
0% upgrade early to get a Windows 8 machine.
Where does that leave Microsoft?
Do they really expect to get enough revenue from their Windows 8 app store to make up for this?
