Illegal aliens? Just days after taking office in January, 2011, Gov. LePage ended Maine’s status as a “sanctuary state.”

Non-gun friendly? I’ve been here 20 years, and Maine is one of the most pro-gun states around. Everyone I know is armed to the teeth. Being mostly rural, there is a tradition of hunting and firearm ownership that goes WAY back. I’ve never heard of Maine wanting to phase-out gun ownership as older gun owners die. That’s news to me.

The southeast corner of the state....where Portland is located....has a big chunk of the state’s overall population. There are a lot of liberals in that area, as well as many of the coastal areas throughout the state.
I’ve heard many Maine people call southern Maine “North Massachusetts.” The southern most part of Maine is within commutable distance to Boston.

The business climate here is not good, although Bushmaster has had a presence in Maine for a number of years.

Maine historically has a great deal of poverty, and it has become, unfortunately, a welfare state. Poor people tend to vote for democrats, as do the well-to-do liberals that have moved to Maine’s coastal areas over the years from liberal states. These low income, rural people, even though they vote for democrats, have a strong tradition of firearm ownership.

Also, the Republican party in Maine is not very organized or well-funded. If they could fine tune a conservative message and get better organized, they could probably do a letter better in elections. The GOP won control of the Maine House and the Maine Senate in 2010, but the dems re-captured the house and senate in 2012.

The Maine National Guard had one of the highest percentages of members deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan of any state.

Thank you for the update. I last stayed in Maine in 1990 while on business. It was scary poor then. The front page of the Presque Isle newspaper one day had a picture of a falling-down shack along with the pix of two brothers who looking like Larry and Daryl from the old Bob Newhart show. They had killed their mother and then hid the pieces in the walls. The smell attracted attention and, well, you can guess the rest. I did not know the new governor had corrected some of the state’s worst Liberal abuses. Good news. But it has more people on welfare now than have work. Rich Liberals are a disease, like hookworm.

You guys have a great CONSEVATIVE governor, but he’s not going to get elected again. You lost the house & senate after just 2 years. Too many welfare cases in Maine. Damn shame cause it’s a beautiful state.
