All one has to do to be call courageous these days is say your gay.

Does not necessarily mean one actually has to be gay.

I mean, it ain’t like being black where its plain for everyone to see, now is it?

Well maybe he isn’t...maybe he isn't - apparently a so-so player scoring less than an everage two points a game - maybe felt the axe was going to fall on his career soon - coming out as gay means he can't be "discriminated against" by being cut because of homophobia for the next year at least......
