Anyone who can string 3 or 4 lines of code together can get a job.

OK, where do I apply? :)

Maybe there would be an opportunity in opening an “adult post-graduate high school”, that would teach intensive courses in what they should have been taught in high school.

With a sales pitch of “Go back to high school, but this time, for real.”

“More than 40 percent of recent U.S. college graduates are underemployed or need more training to get on a career track,”

The dirty little secret is most graduates from elite Ivy League institutions will get jobs. Wall Street investment firms hire those women’s studies, history, art, and psychology majors if they come from the elite schools. A straight a history or psychology major at the average state university won’t get past the door at Goldman Sachs unless she/he has extremely strong connections (i.e. father is a corporate CEO). The Ivy League Schools, plus a few others (Duke, Stanford, Vanderbilt) are all about training the children of the elites of corporate America, academia, the media, and government so most of the grads will be employed.

If you go to a tier 1 or tier 2 state University and earn a business, information technology, nursing, or engineering degree and decent grades, you’ll likely get an entry level job with a decent company. Some liberal arts grads might also find jobs in government or management training programs if they have excellent grades from a better state university. Grads from lower tier state schools or students with average or below performance in liberal arts are going to have a tough time in the job market. Four years of college did not provide them with skills an employer can leverage to increase sales and profits.

To summarize, if you are a child of the elites and can go to an Ivy League or near Ivy League school you are going to do well. Earn that ethnic studies degree and you’ll get a corporate job, government job, or you’ll be well set to go on to a prestigious graduate school. If you are the child of an average citizen, your best bet is to earn a degree that provides specific skills of value to potential employers.

totally agree with the worthless major argument... that and worthless undergrad major followed by worthless graduate degree.

want a job after college....in high school be advanced in Math... math and more math..

and learn how to write well, grammar and spelling count..

finally learn music...learn it well it will help you stand out and get scholarships

why parents will pay exorbitant amounts of money for worthless degrees i have no idea

What heterosexual man did not major in Woman’s Studies? Just not like the Feminazis would teach it. BTW, in 1991, the average income of a Geography Major from UNC class of 1986 was $12,000,000. Of course there only five of them and one of them was Micheal Jordan.

College has simply become a scheme by the bearded liberal professors and the liberal education system to defraud younger generations of their life’s earnings. They steal the future wages of the youth for their own profit in exchange for a mere promise of a better life.

Fools! They each hand over tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of their future earnings to this liberal fleecing machine. Even professions such as doctors walk away in life-long servatude to the debt that they may carry with them to their graves.

But, the liberal elites cheer these “marks” on as they themselves rake in $100k to $500,000k a year in salaries off the backs of these fools, laughing all the way to the bank. Many of these professors themselves could never hold any other job beyond “teaching”.

One thing they did get from college, an attitude that they are special and can’t possibly ever do anything wrong and everyone else is an idiot that couldn’t possibly teach them anything because they already know it all.

It’s been that way for years, and it gets worse every year.

Maybe as a web developer. That logic does not apply to real programming as is evident by the crap we get back from overseas.

It all started with the false premise we need international diversity. The H1-B visa undermines programming. Until that trend we had Americans getting STEM degrees, but why bust your butt and get one now when every big company offshores to undercut salaries getting 3 Indians for one American and reaping crappy code.

A 5% import duty would not double the cost of any import. Hyperbole much?

You can’t even get a customer service job here. We have horrible, thick accented people named “Stan” and “Beth” who handle that.

Seriously, I had a project as an undergrad where the assignment went like this.

Create a bowling score program that shows the frame and the name of the bowler and calculates the score. Now every bowling alley has computerized scoring, nobody can keep score manually anymore!

For any college or university that takes government funds I think kids should have to declare a care objective rather than a major. That would deal with a lot of this problem from the institutional as well as the student perspective.
