Three years ago when I posted this image I was flamed beyond belief. We went ahead and bought forty of them anyway. Cost was about $1,600. Now you get to hear the rest of the story. Savings on electricity @$300/month=$10,800.

These are Par 38 Floods for our Museum headquarters. Also saved replacement costs for Halogen bulbs of about $500 as the tend to fail every two years. Flame me once....shame on me.. well. Nobody really knows how long these bulbs will last. Some folks say 50,000 hours.

I've put CFLs on my basement stairs and front porch because I keep both on for long times and don't really care about the quality of the light. I put a couple 40 watt equivalent LEDs in a hallway because I leave them on a lot and their price had dropped to $10 per bulb when I changed the fixture. If I could find 100 watt equivalent omnidirectional LEDs I would change a few others that I turn on and off a lot like my main living room lights. Maybe next year because 75 watt ones are finally on the shelves.

For 11¢/kWh it costs $1 per watt per year for electricity. So a 100 watt bulb running 6 hours a day costs $25 per year. Make the replacement cheap enough and I have no problem going to LED bulbs. CFLs were too slow to light and too flickery to actually live with.

I was waiting for cost to go down, as well as experience with LED life.

I’m all for energy efficiency if it do not bite my butt as economic inefficiency!

I’ve now picked up a few of these at the discount area in HomeDepot.

The brightness has VASTLY improved and the cost is coming down rapidly. LED will be the light of the future.
