I was fortunate to travel there in 2002. The City Tavern was on my list of places to see. I would argue that our founding happened more so at the City Tavern and not so much Independence Hall; many a philosophical discussion was had over a pint or port (as now!) and Independence Hall is just where they were formalized.

I don’t have a source for that assessment, just a hunch. But I do know that’s where the delegates repaired for drink, food, and talk.

Thanks for sharing your experiences there. As you likely know, this is a rebuilt edifice since the original burned down; but, they were careful to reproduce it well. And I share the feeling about the presence that one can feel, as I was awestruck when eating there. And your thoughts about the real business of the conventions being accomplished at the Tavern are shared by many historians. Cliques dined together, horses were traded and consensus was accomplished. And remember: routine alcohol intake back then was more a part of society's fabric than it is today.

Oh...if you return, don't miss Martha Washington's Chocolate Mousse Cake...worth the calories. And tomkat: you are on the list now.
