Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney announced new criteria for sponsoring parents and grandparents to come to Canada today that are aimed at ensuring elderly immigrants don't end up on welfare or in social housing.
"If you think your parents may need to go on welfare in Canada, please don't sponsor them. We're not looking for more people on welfare, we're not looking to add people as a social burden to Canada.

Who knew!
LMBO!!!
In our country, due to the family “reunification” provisions of our immigration laws (courtesy of Splash Kennedy), we don’t have the right to tell people they cannot sponsor in their elderly parents and sign them up for all kinds of benefits. So they do. Check out SSI, for people who never paid in to the SS system.
Gosh I wish we had some leaders that learned how to tell people that in CA and the west of the USA
I thought the whole point of “sponsoring” someone meant YOU ASSUMED THE RESPONSIBILITY for them financially. If you drag mom and pop over from the old country, you pay for them. PERIOD. STOP.
Canada Ping!
Want to know a bizarre fact? A year or two ago I filled out a Canadian government online form, and if it is to be believed I qualify as either an immigrant worker- or for citizenship.
While I doubt I could stand the cold up there- it’s nice to have a bolt-hole.
No.
To address these concerns, the government is introducing new criteria for sponsoring a parent or grandparent:
The minimum necessary income level is going up by 30 per cent.
Proof of the new income threshold for a minimum of three years instead of one.
Only Canada Revenue Agency notices of assessment will be accepted as proof of income.
Sponsorship commitment period is going from 10 to 20 years.
The maximum age of dependents will now be set at 18 and under.
Thank God for Harper!
Backhoe, nice to see you! Give my best to the Cute Cat Lady!
