Brad Pitt wishes a "long and healthy life" for his fiancée Angelina Jolie.
The Hollywood actress made the decision after genetic tests revealed she had an 87 per cent chance of developing breast cancer and a 50 per cent chance of ovarian cancer.
Brad, 49, today hailed Angelina for showing such bravery during the process.
"Having witnessed this decision firsthand, I find Angie's choice, as well as so many others like her, absolutely heroic," he told British newspaper The London Evening Standard. "I thank our medical team for their care and focus. All I want for is for her to have a long and healthy life, with myself and our children. This is a happy day for our family."

My question is how much did the genetic screening and subsequent prophylactic mastectomy set the Jolie-Pitts back? Moreover, are these procedures covered by Obamacare? If they aren’t, I suppose it means the this kind of “courage” is reserved for the multimillionaire film star class. Real courage is being afflicted with cancer, undergoing brutal chemo, losing all of your hair and still getting up in the morning to make the kids breakfast and going out to work, do the shopping, etc. Thousands of women are doing this in the US, but because they don’t look like supermodels, the media couldn’t care less.

I had this amazing great aunt named Bethel and she had a single mastectomy many many many years ago after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Instead of calling the newspapers like Angelina Jolie she kept it very quiet. When she passed away recently, we discovered that she arranged to have a closed casket. She told my mom, she knew the ladies in her bridge club had a bet on which breast she had removed and she took delight in the fact that they would be denied the last opportunity to attempt a discrete "feel" to determine the bet winners! She was such a delightful and feisty woman!

I am not a doctor, but apparently that genetic marker gives people with that particular mutation an 87-90% chance of getting cancer. Per the short news story I saw she had a 1/10 chance of NOT getting breast cancer, and since her mother died of it (ovarian I believe in her mid thirties) she decided the best thing to do was go radical. I am not defending Jolie, but I believe there is a difference between a woman with an average chance of getting cancer doing this, and a woman with a 90% chance of getting cancer doing this.
Kind of similar to a SWAT member wearing body armor always on the job, and an accountant wearing the same body armor. Probabilities.
On the face of it it does seem like a tough decision to make. It is easy to see that I am not one of those who think this is to take away from the IRR scandal. I don't think there are many women who will chop off both their breasts to take attention from a scandal, especially considering that there are far easier ways of creating news churn that don't necessitate such drastic action (e.g. someone who can allegedly chop of their breasts for Obama would be able to have a sensational orgy, with video, leak to the media).

I don’t necessarily disagree. Thing is that there are hundreds of thousands of other women just like her that made the same decision. Any woman who chooses that is heroic not just a famous actress.

You are right. My local news had two young women (21 and 24) who just did the same thing because they tested positive for the gene marker which gives them a 90% chance of getting breast cancer.
