How fascinating that you are indignant at the idea that their first response should *not* be to call on the government for help.
I would much rather those women have shot the perp themselves.
Those who hold to the view that women should depend on government employees for protection ensure that more women will believe them and refuse to defend themselves.
I’m not bragging, but our sheriff took out a bank robber at 100 yards who had a gun to a clerk’s head. One shot, one kill.

Many years ago (I think in the 1960s), a guy had robbed some place in downtown Dallas TX. He tried to escape by grabbing a woman from the crowded sidewalk, used his gun to get a taxi to stop and then got into the back seat while holding his gun to the woman’s head.
Back then, traffic was heavy and slow in the downtown area during the daytime. ...Texas Ranger arrived on the scene, his car a block or so away from the taxi. He took a scoped rifle from the trunk of his car and fired one shot through the rear window of the taxi into the head of the criminal, ending the whole affair with no other injuries.
If he had only had seven rounds the young woman might still be alive.
I went to Hofstra in the 60’s and the area was changing rapidly and not for the better. The towns surrounding the school are pretty rough.
At least the cop went home safe that night. That is all that matters/s

An LEO is supposed to be able to handle a situation like that....you are trained to do so. This is not Russia....we do not shoot the hostages here.
This family needs to exercise their 7th Amendment rights
If you HAVE a gun, of course you shoot the perp. If you don’t, then what? Sit back and enjoy it? Or call the police? I think I’d choose the latter.

Don't shoot much do you? I could take out a perp holding a hostage with one shot up to 50 yards easily and not touch the hostage. 100 yards I would still be 98 percent certain of hitting only the perp. This is with a handgun. I am a very good shot but there are better than I am.
The fault here lies in improper handgun marksmanship training on most(if not all)police forces. They don't require them to shoot often enough and they don't train them correctly.

We're not talking about a static shooting range situation here, my FRiend. We're talking about a very fluid, stressful, combat situation. The perp could well be moving, and moving in an unpredictable way.
Perhaps you, or an extremely well-trained police officer, could hit a moving target in such a situation. But perhaps not. The discussion on this thread was whether or not the shot was worth the risk to the hostage.
By the way, why did you start your post with an insult? That sort of thing rarely contributes to a discussion.
A cops first duty should be to the people he is supposedly trying to protect. If someone points a gun at him while holding a hostage and the cop can't make the shot, he shouldn't shoot. This cop is guilty of manslaughter at the very least, and IMO should be tried for 2nd degree murder.
I never said that. Of course you can hit a target with a handgun, under the right conditions.

Well, you've certainly got a point there! But sarcasm is often seen as rudeness, and then the entire conversation can quickly go downhill.

But there is always a risk, especially if the perp is moving erratically. Even more so if the perp is holding the hostage in front of him, as a shield.
