Yep. She got her 'sound bite' out into the media. Mission accomplished. Issa should have made her sit there and make a fool out of herself, rather than to play THEM for fools.

America is screwed because we've become too soft. Trey Gowdy was the only MAN in that room today. God Bless him. PUT HIM IN CHARGE OF EVERYTHING.

0bama not firing anyone is DISGUSTING. Has he ever forced anyone to resign, or does he see this assault on America as a big joke? Don't answer that!

Our DOJ is run by a CRIMINAL! We expect the IRS or Treasury Dept. to be run by criminals but the DOJ is the LAST agency that should be run by a CRIMINAL!

I’m not a lawyer, but I agree with Gowdy. Issa blew it. He should have kept Lerner there all day and made he take the Fifth on every question. WTF is wrong with that guy?

The committee knew in advance that Lerner would take the Fifth.

Issa and Gowdy have worked together very closely thus far. And both have recognized the need to pre-plan the hearings' conduct for maximum impact and information.

I'd wager that their pas de deux was pre-planned as a response to precisely what happened -- a self-righteous statement of innocence followed by an assertion of the Fifth.

Lerner's legal status under the circumstances will now be definitively determined and she will be recalled -- and either forced to testify or under some negotiated immunity.

She's not out of the woods.

In a sane world, the irs would be shut down and this (female of the dog species) would be in jail.

Taking the 5th, huh?

Does that also work when filling out your income tax form?

I am so disgusted with this government. At a private company, if I was involved in an internal investigation and refused to fully cooperate and answer questions, I would be immediately terminated and all pension/benefits eliminated as I would have been discharged “with cause”.

I am sick of this government. The same should happen to these people. Don’t want to answer the questions? Fine. immediate termination and no benefits/pension. Oh, by the way, you are still subject to a criminal investigation and jail if the investigation warrants such action.

I want out of this country. It is a lost cause.

I believe Issa is merely a thief and a thug.

Beliefs belong in church.

Darrell Issa has been a member of Congress since 2001. Why are you lying about him and trying to infer that he’s a freshman Member of Congress?

Seriously, why are you blatantly lying about one of the leading conservatives in Congress?

The proper response should be manadated as: "If I were to answer your question truthfully, I would be testifying against myself -- therefore, under the Fifth Amendment, I refuse to answer your question."

Very hard to follow that up with the codicil "And nothing illegal happened".

With the exception of Gowdy, the GOP is stuck on stupid. Did these nitwits not even talk to one another prior to this hearing?

It’s like Jack Nicholson giving the speech in A Few Good Men and then trying to walk out of the court room.

pshaw! that's exactly what she did because that's exactly what they let her do! WTF?!?!?!?!

Yep. She testified that she did nothing wrong, and then said she wasn’t going to testify.

I agree, and from what I just heard from Rush Limbaugh, he agrees as well. Rush thinks Lerner is going to get away with it... this sucks.

I understand the outrage about the scandal, but not about taking the 5th. These days there are so many cases of people who were very likely innocent, and certainly not even close to convicted of Federal charges, who eventually were convicted for violations of federal statues they’d never heard of, mixing up facts in their recollection of events during testimony, etc. I bet there is a good chance she is paying for her own legal counsel here, and is being advised that she has absolutely nothing to gain, and a whole life to lose by testifying if she is innocent. Think about it. I would not even consider testifying if I were innocent, unless given absolute immunity.

Is it any coincidence that the two posters most critical of Congressman Issa on this thread - chris37 and Sequoyah101 - joined FR just nine days apart just before the Presidential election in 2008?

Coincidence?

As a tactical matter, I believe Issa should have kept her ass in a seat before the committee, forced to invoke the Fifth to every question, as a matter of optics as well as for the record. You can bet if a RAT were running the committee and the witness was hostile to his agenda, that’s what would have happened. Issa talks tougher than he acts. I don’t believe Issa and Gowdy planned their interaction because I can’t see what was accomplished by it.

I think Sequoyah101 is another of his user names. Look at when the accounts were started and then look at the similarities between them.

I wish I were an admin so I could see if the two accounts are sourced to the same IP address.

I thought it was interesting Lerner “refused to answer on grounds it may incriminate her” before we even for to a question mark. Have to wonder if Issa let her off the hook so he could find out if he could now compel her to testify (be cross examined) since she did make a statement. That would be a two (popcorn) bagger session!
