Has anyone else noticed that none of the British media has opened the comment section?

They never do with any news story reporting a criminal act, as under British contempt of court laws comments could be deemed to prejudice subsequent criminal proceedings.

Well, we can fix that, can't we?

On the whole this benefits the prosecution rather than the defence in a criminal trial: since defence lawyers could otherwise claim that prejudicial comment published about a named defendant could affect his right to a fair trial. And in the case of online comments posted on a newspaper website, these are deemed to have been ‘published’ by the newspaper, even though it has no control over the content of the comment.
