Add another item to the list of red flags that may get you audited: Adopting a child.
The Internal Revenue Service mishandled tax returns of adoptive families, flagging for further review 90% of those who claimed the adoption tax credit for the 2012 filing season.
And a report by the federal agencys Taxpayer Advocate Service also found that nearly 70% of adoptive families more than 35,000 had at least a partial audit of their tax return.
By contrast, just one percent of all returns are audited.

“The question is, did the IRS find a lot of fraud justifying the 70%.”
If you follow the link at this thread you will find that the amount of disallowed expenses in tax year 2011 was around one and one-half percent. And I’m not sure that “disallowed” would necessarily be considered fraud.

This sounds terrible.
It is clearly time to replace the income tax with a simple direct tax that gets rid of all this complexity, expense, and opportunity for any misguided politicians to abuse (abuse us, that is).
I say this as someone who has nothing but respect for the courteous help at the IRS. Everyone there should be offered an equivalent or better job to be sure! But, as a country we definitely need to change to a far less burdensome (and far less susceptible to abuse by those we elect) system.
I’d love to see data on:
% Moslems audited, vs. % Christians audited.
IRS should be examining CAIR and mosques for terror-funding and tax evasion, but they’ve flipped the table and targeted Christians/Jews instead.
Bottom line is the “Federal Government” is suffering massive PR damage because of this IRS persecution of American citizens.
I don’t care what any polls say. This unfolding episode finally puts the lie to Democrats and GOP “acting in your best interest.”
The corruption in government won’t stop until the powers-that-be have trouble seizing tax dollars and property from citizens.
At that point, they either throw the racketeers out, or we become Greece.
So far, looks like we’re headed for Greece.
That’s because adopting families get ridiculous tax breaks. I know a family that has years of credits, and won’t pay any federal tax.
we adopted 40 years ago...
THERE WERE NO TAX CREDIT THEN...WE SURVIVED
