Build a fence, and then build military barracks every few miles. Staff it with soldiers coming home from Iraq. This would be a great way to train soldiers and patrol the border. Sort of like a long thin military base.

I had the same idea. Or use soldiers from bases in Europe we don’t need. But alas we suffer from too much common sense.
