the majority of Audiences are NOT comfortable with the image of a STRONG caring Black father and a son who loves and respects him...
(many are comfortable with quite the opposite...i.e. Scandal being one of the highest rated shows on Tv right now... However, the majority of black characters on that show AND Grey’s Anatomy have F’ed up relations towards each other and the people around them, which reflects poorly on them)
Also many of these negative reviews allude to NOT being comfortable with the deviation of Will Smith from the “shucking and jiving” sterotypical black characters he usually plays,
( hitch,agent J, Mike in bad boys, Hancock, the fresh prince, even the main character in I am legend wasn’t as well spoken as this character in after earth)...although the character is acted well for its context.
Lastly Like many of M.Night’s movies have some sort of messages with them...
(Devil was a strange take on human nature, the happening was about the environment as this movie is also about the environment,as well as a parable and comming of age tale)
Just like how so many irrationally cannot take orders from out president and hide behind crap like “benghazi” and “Obama care” the same situation is unfolding... people CANNOT Take seeing black men have themselves together and TEACHING other people a lesson.

IIRC one of the most popular television shows a number of years ago was the Cosby show. Not only a strong caring father but a strong caring mother as well, and wait for it they were both employed and successful. If we want to take it a step further both sets of grandparents were in the exact same mold. As if I recall, All six of these adults expected that the children would be successful in school as well.
The comment you quoted from the IMDB is retarded. Most people fervently desire to see any men acting like responsible men, especially black men. Why do you think the Cosby show was so popular during the 80s/90s? One of the reasons that Obama was elected was precisely because many people, especially liberals, wanted this affirmation/image of a responsible family man who happens to be black, that they voted in somebody with no qualifications and a questionable background to achieve it.
I will not take orders from anyone - not from Bush, and not from the usurper. Even if Governor Palin takes office, I will not take orders from her. It's not a race thing, it's about freedom - the president works for me, not the reverse. Also, it is not the president's place to teach me a lesson. It's his (and hopefully soon her) place to faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States and to the best of his ability to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.
From the descriptions of the movie, it sounds like Will Smith became a soul-less automaton - not loving or caring about the child. And losing the subtle humor that made him popular.
And the movie bombed in part because it is a Scientology lesson wrapped in a boring two hour movie.
