No doubt it gets complicated...somebody is going to loose.

I understand that she is at the top of the children’s list at the hospital where there are other children as sick as she is though...and that was stated from someone in the hospital working this. Probably because apparently she is dying...and likely have done all those tests etc.

Probably so...I don't know enough about her case to comment as to her health and any other issues she has.

Still...it's not a decision made by one individual...regardless of the parents desires. All parents want their children to live. Is she on BOTH the adult list and the childrens list?

...”what an unregulated market in human organs would look like?”...

There already is one..world-wide...and yes it's like human trafficking. In some cases woman are getting pregnant in order to “harvest” body parts.

1600 is waiting for the call. I have Pulmonary Fibrosis.
.............................................................................................
My heart goes out to you as I know what having lung disease means for you as you struggle every day. This is so excrutiatingly painful to be discussing this when it hits so close to home and it comes off as being callous. You are in my prayers as is Sarah and all others with terminal illness. There are no easy answers.

Lungs are a difficult organ to harvest because they’re so easily injured and vulnerable to infection.

When donors are brain-dead, which is often the case, they’re kept on a ventilator to maintain oxygen in the blood supply going to their still-healthy organs. But ventilators can damage the lungs, and they often promote infections such as pneumonia.

Only about 1 in 5 lungs from deceased donors is viable for transplantation. Dr. Jasleen Kukreja, surgical director of the lung transplant program at UCSF, said doctors have worked out techniques to recover some of those lungs, including treating infections after the organs have been removed.

UCSF expects to start using a new technique next year that involves placing injured donor lungs into a machine that will pump blood and nutrients into them and repair them before they are transplanted.

But much work remains if doctors and surgeons are going to improve long-term survival rates.

Many lung recipients experience a sudden and remarkable improvement in their health after their surgery,... only to end up gasping for breath again in four or five years.

Thanks for the links...it certainly isn’t a slam dunk for this girl yet...but it would seem her “chances” for a transplant have increased...since she’s also on the children’s list?

I’d like my tag line better if this board didn’t put those weird A’s in it. They are show as apostrophes in preview and get weird when it posts.

Big government and militarized police have got to go. But there is a place for government and regulating traffic in human organs is one of them.

They set up an excellent system with all the stakeholders having a voice and run by the medical experts that do the transplants and the research doing the very best science to help the most people possible.

It’s being mucked up by the media and the politicians grandstanding for face time.

I’m very sorry for the parents, but what they are doing and the way they are doing it is wrong. Asking a judge to substituted his non expert judgement for those of the transplant experts is wrong and opens the door for every desperate person to do the same.

Hard cases make bad law.

Do you prefer that organ transplants be governed privately? Maybe an online ebay where transplants are decided by the highest bidder?

What’s your solution if you want the government out of the organ transplant game?

I was listening to the Sebelius sound bite from the hearing on this and the first thing that I thought of, after the deep sorrow I feel for this girl and her family, was, I wonder if she’s white and her family are registered Republicans.

Remember, Jackson-lee said Barry has a database on everyone.

Try this (plain text c&p to your tag line)

If the police can’t solve a problem with brute force, they’ll find a way to fix it with brute force

I'll bet Kathy Sillybus is going to be throwing a tantrum over this. She's supposed to be a goddess. Who does this judge think he is?

If you lob a poltician, and no one is around when it lands, does it make a sound?

I agree. Normal lung transplants are very risky and I can't remember having seen lungs ever being “re sized”. You can remove lobes but that's about all I'm aware of.

I do feel for that family and the little girl but sadly people die all the time while waiting for lungs. Also numerous people are not listed for various reasons and they also die. I'm fearful now that we're going to see lawsuits from anybody that is denied being listed and there are simply not enough available lungs to use on very high risk patients.

On the other hand I hope any of you people who aren't donors will consider changing that situation now. If we had enough donors all of this would become less of an issue.
