Source: Santa Monica gunman previously hospitalized for mental health (Update: John Zawahri)

The gunman's rampage began at a home in this beachfront city, leaving two dead inside. Then he carjacked a woman and fired at a public bus. It all ended when police shot him dead at Santa Monica College as students studied for finals, a mile from the house.

His blood trail, however, left four people dead Friday in Santa Monica, which abuts Los Angeles and is renowned for its liberal openness.

A law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN on Saturday that the gunman had suffered mental health issues. A couple of years ago, he was hospitalized for treatment after allegedly talking about harming someone, according to the official.

Now they're IDing the shooter as John Zawahri. So, maybe Christopher is the murdered brother and not the shooter.

SM gets a lot of money from Tourism — I’m going to guess that is why there is a news BLACKOUT. And that is exactly what it is. I live two blocks from the college — helicopters for 6 hours, city buses re-routed up and down my street and 7 stations yesterday AND not to have a Local update today is preposterous.

cynwoody — thanks — good info there. And to you too Sarah.

And your right, a lot of tourists go to the Promenade and Santa Monica Place(been there a few times) and since the mother has not been notified yet I guess I can understand why they won’t reveal the name. The gunman did NOT have an AR-15, he had a 223 Rifle..but of course the media will keep on referring to it as an “assault weapon”

Maybe. But I suspect that , if the family were Christian, we would already know it.

You’ve seen that 60’s painted, colorful open air tour bus haven’t you that goes down Pico to the beach? Well, it came by my house yesterday. Now I know they re-routed Pico buses but to not cancel that silly “Kandy-Kool-Aid” thing was bizarre.

Lots of foreign travelers with SM as destination and of course, the high percentage of foreign students at SMCC. I ran into one Irish tour group in Sept who wanted to know when the sun would come out, as that’s what was promised in their brochure. Yes, I laughed.

if the family were Christian

Reportedly, they are Jordanian and belong to the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church.

Given he shot relatives first, it's likely this is an Adam Lanza or Charlie Whitman type of case and not jihadism.

Of course, it's also possible his family had turned Christian, but he got the old religion back.

On the Promenade, you see A LOT of foreigners..I like the Promenade, you see a lot of whackos there but its still lots of fun, good stores..been to the movie theater on Arizona and 2nd with my friend a few times, nice place..but since I live so close to The Grove I mainly go there

On another mass shooting, the one in New Orleans a few weeks ago in which 15 people were shot, not a peep from Barry. Wonder why?

Final count turned out to be 19 per FOX 8 local news.

“Jordanian and belong to the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church.”

Finally some better information. On the other thread I tried to caution that we should not jump to the conclusion that the perpetrator was Muslim. What struck me is that the Father’s name was Samir. I have know eastern Christians from the M.E. who had that name. Then someone else on the thread knew Lebanese Christians with the last name of Zawahri.

I now suspect that the family is of Christian background, and many of these M.E. Christian groups go back many, many generations. That is, not new converts.

There are several Christian groups in the M.E. and many have fled because of persecution.

“Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antiochian_Orthodox_Christian_Archdiocese_of_North_America

“The Antiochian Orthodox followers were originally cared for by the Russian Orthodox Church in America and the first bishop consecrated in North America, Saint Raphael of Brooklyn, was consecrated by the Russian Orthodox Church in America in 1904 to care for the Syro-Levantine Greek Orthodox Christian Ottoman immigrants to the USA and Canada, who had come chiefly from the Vilayets of Adana, Aleppo, Beirut and Damascus (the birthplace of the community’s founder St Raphael).”

There are also Arab Christians in Lebanon who are Maronite and recognize the Pope, but have married priests:

Although reduced in numbers today, Maronites remain one of the principal ethno-religious groups in Lebanon. The Maronite Church asserts that since its inception, it has always remained faithful to the Church of Rome and the Pope.[2] In November 2012, Pope Benedict appointed Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros al-Rahi as a Cardinal.[3]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maronite_Church

“Before the conquest by Arabian Muslims reached Lebanon, the Lebanese people, including those who would become Muslim and the majority who would remain Christian, spoke a dialect of Aramaic.[4][5][6] Syriac (Christian Aramaic) still remains the liturgical language of the Maronite Church.[7] The members of the Maronite Church are a part of the Syriac people; though they have, over time, developed a distinctive Maronite character, this has not obscured their Antiochene and Syriac origin.”
