Study raises hope of combating global warming by reducing soot
Christian Science Monitor ^ | June 13, 2013 | by Pete Wetspotts

Between 1989 and 2008, clean-air rules in California virtually halved the concentrations of black-carbon soot in the state's skies, in effect reducing the state's carbon footprint by the equivalent of cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 21 million tons a year, according to new analysis.

Though the data have yet to be fed into global climate models to see if California's results can be replicated elsewhere, they bolster the hope that focusing on black-carbon soot could be an effective way to begin to address global warming.

Estimates of how large an effect soot controls could have on global warming will have to wait until models chew over the new data. But the report's lead author is willing to hazard an educated guess.

"I'm speculating that it could cut down the rate of warming by 15 percent" over the near term, says Veerabhadran Ramanathan-Wankerdo, a researcher at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif.

“But only Zathras have no-one to talk to. No-one manages poor Zathras, you see. So Zathras talks to dirt. Sometimes talks to walls, or talks to ceilings. But dirt is closer. Dirt is used, through everyone walking on it. Just like Zathras”

“I’m speculating that it could cut down the rate of warming by 15 percent”

Well, I guess that settles it, then.

Veerabhadran Ramanathan-Wankerdo

You couldn’t come up with a name like that if you tried.

I would imagine most of the soot now comes from
third world cooking fires.

Exactly. Manufacturing dries up in the USA, black soot goes down 15%. Everyone offshores to China? Black soot and brown clouds settle in there permanently.

But that’s ok, because only white Christian pollute as they are evil and hoggish consumers of Mother Gaia. We must further ruin our economy to stop them!

That’s interesting.

We are now 17 years 4 months into a “warming plateau”, with no statistically significant surface warming for that period of time.

Ergo: It’s just great that California has corralled all this soot, leading to this warming pause.

/sarcasm

Maybe we should wait to see if we are going into a mini-ice-age.

So, there was an idea floating around that if we pollute the atmosphere with soot ( like a black ash from a volcano), it would help alleviate global warming by reflecting the rays of the sun. It was by the students of the people that said if we polluted the sky more, it would help trap heat and alleviate the upcoming ice age.

Maybe in a few years, it’ll come around again.

Ah, so the CO2 thing didn’t work out so well, huh?

And since temps aren’t changing, we must have already taken care of that soot problem quite a bit, too, huh?

So, you folks can stand down and go watch some more TV.

“I’m speculating that it could cut down the rate of warming by 15 percent”

I speculate that if they could increase the number of self-proclaimed climate scientists by 15 percent, they could create at least 30% more excuses as to why global warming is a problem.
