From your nyt link...Monsanto gave foundation $5million in 2008 to give out awards. Current Monsanto award was $250,000. Very probably Monsanto is paying for their own 2013 award and PR stunt to prop up industry.

As for propping up the food industry, I think they'll do okay without the $5,000,000.
