LIVE Open thread: Senate to vote on Gang of Eight bill at 5:30 ET

To be more specific, they’re voting on the bill plus the Corker/Hoeven amendment. My prediction: 72 yes votes, despite the phony border-security “triggers” and despite the fact that the bill now reeks of “Cornhusker Kickback”-style buyoffs to bring fencesitting Republicans on board. No matter. Schumer’s goal was 70 and I expect he’ll get it, which will help him with his exciting new “there’ll be mass demonstrations if the House doesn’t pass this thing” talking point.

Did you know that amnesty for illegals is a “civil rights” issue? You do now:

“This has the potential of becoming the next major civil rights movement. I could envision in the late summer or early fall if Boehner tries to bottle the bill up or put something in without a path to citizenship — if there’s no path to citizenship, there’s not a bill — but if he tries to bottle it up or do things like that, I could see a million people on the Mall in Washington,” Schumer said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Schumer said business leaders, evangelical leaders and CEOs of high tech companies would join the public call for action by the House on immigration.

He’s kidding himself if he thinks that summer will bring pressure on the House to pass, rather than kill, the bill, but never mind that......

Diversity Immigrant Visa (according to wiki info, but it looks correct) known as the “green card lottery”.

“The Diversity Immigrant Visa program is a United States congressionally mandated lottery program for receiving a United States Permanent Resident Card.

new class of immigrants known as “diversity immigrants” (DV immigrants). The Act makes available 55,000[1] permanent resident visas annually to natives of countries deemed to have low rates of immigration to the United States....”

Mexico is one of the countries that is “ineligible” countries for the diversity immigrant.(diversity immigrants only apply to those who came here legally).

Another LAW flouted in our face.

By not agreeing to bypass the reading of the bill. Each bill requires unanimous consent to dispense with the reading of the bill. All it would take is ONE person with guts to force the bill to be read.

There are 52 D, 2 I, and 46 R in the senate. The final vote wan 68-32. Since there were 15 R traitors, there were only 31 R NO votes, so some D or I voted NO.

So every last one of them screwed the process and us. Any one of them could have slowed this thing down and at least ensured that our “leaders” were not necessarily driving this country over the cliff with their eyes deliberately blindfolded.

Why wouldn’t ANYBODY require it to be read? Cruz?

Rubio did end up voting for it. All the flip-flop was just for circus kicks.

Why not have a massive call-in campaign to both the RNC & NRSC? Burn the phone lines up. Shut down the websites. It’s been so difficult to get through to senators ( and soon the House members) that at least our opinions can be focused ,too, on those who hold the purse strings. I know a lot of us have let them know that they aren’t getting our money anymore, but to let them know this and the threat of leaving the GOP over this issue might at least get some notice and it is focused on two specific places rather than scattered, and ignored, among all the members of Congress.

I know, lot’s of reasons it won’t work, as some have already stated, but hey, what have we got to lose....just our country, Constitution, and the rule of law.

Flip-flop? He has been voting with the Chuck Schumer GOP very consistently.

Yeah I just found the quote from Sarah’s article that she wrote last night
“Look no further than page 983 of the bill, which contains a special visa exemption for foreign seafood workers in the 49th state despite huge unemployment numbers in the American workforce. This is obviously a hidden favor designed to buy the votes of Alaska Senators Murkowski and Begich.”
So there ya go, now you know why RINO Murkowski voted YES

What’s really bad is that I find myself rooting for the Russians in Syria. Assad is better than the heinous animals our tax money is sending weapons to. I don’t know what to do about July 4th because I don’t think I can fly an American flag at this point, and I sure as heck don’t want to shoot off fireworks celebrating the death of my country.

Conservatives don’t typically have protests; we’re all too busy working so we can pay our taxes that go to wasteful projects like arming the Syrians who are butchering Christians and say they’re coming after us when they’re done in Syria. But we have to do something. I think the most patriotic thing I could do to observe Independence Day would be to protest.

Wow, you share my sentiments EXACTLY! The 4th of July was always one of my very favorite holidays (a close second to Christmas, actually), but for the first time in my life I’m not feeling very enthusiastic about celebrating our nation’s independence this year. Everything I cherish and every institution that made this country the greatest in the history of the planet is now under withering assault by our evil and corrupt government, media, academia, and legal system and it just feels like we’re anything but independent now.

It certainly appears we’ve fallen under the rule of soft tyranny and authoritarianism, yet I simply refuse to concede and surrender to the satanism/progressivism (yes, they are one in the same) currently pervading the culture. Given that our elected (mis)representatives in Washington now seem hellbent on forcing amnesty of 11+ million illegal aliens on us and in the process transforming the nation into a third world banana republic, I can’t help but agree that some sort of a patriotic protest on July 4th is in order because I absolutely HATE with a passion the direction this country is going.

I don’t know where it’s at, but I read the press release put out by Sessions, at http://www.sessions.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=PressShop.NewsReleases&ContentRecord_id=789acab8-a06d-4358-4a84-e5980c7dce05&IsPrint=true

Wasn’t the government telling us just 2 months ago that they were going to “crack down” on students overstaying their visas - in response to the “Saudi person of interest” in the Boston marathon bombing? He turns out to be Osama Bin Laden’s son Hamza (and once that was found out Michelle O visited him in the hospital for a figurative high-five so all the world Muslims will know she’s in on what they’re doing to us, and somebody removed the “known terrorist” classification from him so he could be deported before anybody could do anything to enforce justice.

So why the heck is the Senate now voting to grant amnesty to those who overstay their visas? Why don’t our Senators just go bend over in front of Bin Laden’s son as if to say, “You can’t rape us if we consent”?

This is absolute lunacy!

Unfortunately we, and our children /grandchildren have a front row seat to the treasonous selling out of our Country. All so those in power can have their slice of the pie for themselves. What Cowards they are!
