The Egyptian army has set a deadline of 4 p.m. Cairo time for the Muslim Brotherhood government of President Morsi to compromise with the people of Egypt (by stepping down.) Morsi refuses. 18 people were killed and 200 were wounded in clashes at Cairo University last night.
A Washington Post report from Cairo on dueling statements from Morsi and the army:
Waving his hands and shaking his fists in a 45-minute speech on national television late Tuesday, Morsi swore that he was committed to the democratic process that brought him to power and said that any attempts to subvert the constitution were “unacceptable.”
The army, in turn, posted a message to its Facebook page saying: “We swear to God that we will sacrifice even our blood for Egypt and its people, to defend them against any terrorist, radical or fool.”
In his speech, Morsi acknowledged that he had made mistakes during his year in office as Egypt’s first democratically elected president. But he appealed to Egyptians to give him more time to deal with the country’s problems.

As a deadline approaches when the army high command is expected to step in and reorder Egypt’s political institutions, the sources said staff not involved in working on live broadcasts had left the building.

Morsi has instituted a constitution based on Shira Law. It takes away many of the rights of those who do not practice Islam.
Their economy is in the cesspoll, and they are close to food rationing.

07/03/2013 15:51 Tweet CAIRO - The political wing of Egypt’s ruling Muslim Brotherhood refused an invitation to meet the armed forces commander on Wednesday, hours before an army deadline for Islamist President Mohamed Morsi to yield to mass protests or quit, military and party sources said.
“We do not go to invitations (meetings) with anyone. We have a president and that is it,” said Waleed al-Haddad, a senior leader of the Freedom and Justice Party told Reuters.
Same thing will happen in Turkey and Syria..
Once people have had a taste of the good life...and freedom...you take that away and there will be rebellion.
I disagree. I think Egyptians were willing and are still willing to trade away freedom for economic prosperity, and that is part of the problem. There is a complete disconnect from the reality that freedom brings prosperity, and few have ever suffered from 'too much freedom.'
What they got was 8 million people who drifted into utter poverty, to join the other existing 32 million, putting half the population in economic chains. Just think of what a shock it is to the overall economy to within a year have ten percent of all business lost, and the carry on effects on the middle class.
Quite a few in this country are more than willing to trade away their freedom as well for the possibility of prosperity. To the point where in the last presidential election, BOTH candidates advocated for strong federal control of any and all aspects of life.

07/03/2013 15:48 Tweet CAIRO - A spokesman for Mohamed Morsi said the president believed it would be better to die “standing like a tree”, defending the electoral legitimacy of his office, than to go down in history as having destroyed Egyptians’ hopes for democracy.
Saying that Morsi was not seeking to cling to office for its own sake, spokesman Ayman Ali told Reuters that, in his overnight speech to the nation, the president had defied calls to resign in order to “defend the democratic system”.
“It is better for a president, who would otherwise be returning Egypt to the days of dictatorship, from which God and the will of the people has saved us, to die standing like a tree,” Ali said, “Rather than be condemned by history and future generations for throwing away the hopes of Egyptians for establishing a democratic life.”
Sounds like the Army was holding out one last olive branch to the MB and have them oust Morsi but stay in power and the MB spit on it.
