Well, Twitter is full of thugs claiming they are going to riot and loot if Zimmerman is acquitted. Wonder what will happen when they are surprised by shopkeepers who are prepared and have had enough?

They will go someplace else. IMO, the majority of those twits will not riot in the first place. Rioting from behind the keyboard is much safer.
Gangs will not be attacking a defended position until they are willing to die for their cause. Soldiers who protect their country have such cause; their motives require being able to escape with the loot, unharmed. Vandals, robbers and thieves have no cause that is stronger than fear of maiming or of death. Deeper into the TEOTWAWKI, as gangs consolidate and become military structures, a cause may develop - with severe punishment for deserting and with at least some explanation why gang members must keep fighting and dying. For example, access to food supplies may be only possible if you fight for them. Today this is not the case.
