(CNN) - An Asiana Airlines' Boeing 777 crashed and burned Saturday while landing at San Francisco International Airport, sending up a large plume of dark smoke from the aircraft, which lost its tail and much of its roof.

Looks like a low approach. Boulders are dislodged on water’s edge, debris starts there, and shortly down the strip there are the three tail surfaces and landing gear torn off.
Gonna take a lot of duct tape and grabber screws to fix this bad boy.
When I was doing business out in California, I always flew into Oakland.
About one time out of three, SF flights would be diverted to Oakland anyway.

I think gg2’s husband had it right: pilot was looking at instrumentation instead of the ground.

Just spoke to my brother that is a senior check pilot on the 777 for Delta. He said it really seemed like he landed short and knocked the tail off. More data is needed as to why he did that.
Long ago, a JapanAir 747 landed short of the runway in the bay at SFO. I think it was in the late 60’s. Perfect landing, just it was not a sea plane.
Pilot got a window seat in Japan for the rest of career.

Yup. Looks like the pilot landed a tad too soon.
Personally, I would regard the possibility of a bomb as being very low. While it is true that the 'Underwear Bomber" was trying for an explosion upon landing in Detroit, most terror bombings try for earlier detonations when time factors are better known. At takeoff or in mid-flight would almost guarantee total fatalities whereas this one has majority survivorship.
To me this appears to be human error or flight difficulty. Time will tell but still I tend to think malice is unlikely.

My best wild guess from looking at the pictures, plane experienced downward wind draft, this caused the plane’s engine’s and landing gears to be taken out by the wall. Impact was so hard that the tail came off and feel in to the water.
The hot right side engine rolled with the plane and ended up next to the cabin, heated it up and that’s how the fire started.
No further detail about the Coast Guard transport. However, CNN has repeated the story. Earlier reports had described water search and rescue activities.

of the airport.
