Lawmakers overwhelmingly voted Friday to back Ireland’s first bill on abortion, legalizing the practice in exceptional cases where doctors deem the woman’s life at risk from her pregnancy, as the predominantly Catholic country took its first legislative step away from an outright ban.
Exhausted legislators applauded Friday’s 127-31 vote, while outside the parliament gates abortion rights activists cheered as they watched the result on their smartphones. It capped a grueling debate that locked lawmakers in argument from Wednesday morning to 5 a.m. Thursday and, after a pause for sleep, through midnight Friday.
While the decisive outcome was expected given Prime Minister Enda Kenny’s lopsided parliamentary majority, passage of the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill did inflict damage on Kenny’s 2-year-old coalition government.

Who needs Oliver Cromwell or potato famine? The Irish will just as easily have liberalism do the killing of them.
Indeed this seems true, sadly. The Irish are so Hell bent to earn the esteem of the “cool kids” on the Continent that they gleefully allow their ancient and admirable culture to collapse around them. What the New Model Army and the wall at Kilmainham couldn't destroy the Irish will throw away like litter. De Valera and Pearse, God rest their souls, must be in mourning today.

It is sad, but I feel similarly of our own beloved homeland, which in many ways is further gone than Europe. And now, I don't even have a decent Ireland to escape to. I may have to consider Poland (my maternal ancestry as well as my wife's) for retirement.

I prayed for Ireland to do the right thing. Perhaps I did not pray enough.

If they actually specified "LIFE at risk", then the standard is way higher than ours. Our laws only say "health" at risk, and that has been interpreted as meaning any trivial reason will do, and in practice, a reason isn't necessary.
In my opinion, although this sounds better than our law, "My mental health is damaged because being pregnant makes me fat," in practice it will work out the same.
If they are using actual medical criteria supported by research, then the last thing they would want to do is commit an abortion on a suicidal woman. Abortion increases the risk of suicide.
Ectopic pregnancy must be treated by ending the pregnancy; the woman will almost certainly die otherwise. Conditions like placenta previa or preeclampsia (both of which I had during my first pregnancy) are also treated by ending the pregnancy. The difference is that ectopic occurs so early in the pregnancy that there is no choice about killing the baby; preeclampsia actually has a fairly high survival rate for mother and baby.
I guess a common-sense standard should be that the goal of treatment should be to mitigate pregnancy complications, and that abortion may be a side effect of the treatment but cannot be the first resort; where possible, the treatment should protect both lives. (Yeah, I know, trying to get evidence-based common sense written into the law is nearly impossible where abortion is concerned.)
They are not. They want abortion on demand, and any weasel-words that end up with that result are entirely intentional.
I am aware of that. For all the lip service given to legal abortion being about women's health, the actual health of women takes very low priority to those promoting abortion.
We're also supposed to believe that no other health issue matters. As long as abortion is readily available, we're supposed to believe that our health begins and ends there. Mammograms, Pap smears, heart health--none of that matters because we're freed of having to responsibly prevent pregnancy.
Sorry, I'm just venting here. I see so clearly that the abortion industry hates women, yet so many women fall for their shallow spiel. And I wonder why.
I agree with you. One blogger writing about the current legislation in Texas pointed out that even limiting abortion to the first half of pregnancy might discourage some women from screwing losers like him. (The blog post generated copy from several other writers.)
Women need to pay attention to this. They need to know what men really think about them, and develop some self-respect, and tell the men to go bleep each other - which won’t generate any pregnancies.
