Wish you’d been there the day I got off the Harley and went in Borders looking for the woman who’d left her little foo-foo dog to roast.

She wouldn’t acknowledge the manager’s store page regarding the dog so I went looking for her, even though I didn’t know which person was her.

While I was stomping around the back of the store asking everybody if it was their dog, she bolted out the front and took off before I could get hold of her.

In my area, cops are slow to respond.

Years ago we found a GSD in extremis in a Walmart lot.

He was hysterically trying to bite his way out of the car-oven and the whole outside of the car was running with his blood.

Once again, nobody answered the page and we had to keep offering the dog ice water while waiting for the cops to show up...15 minutes later.

They knocked out the window.

I have no idea what happened with that.

Unless it’s to the vet, my dogs stay home all summer.

Too many things can happen.

What if my AC suddenly stops working, far from home?

I won’t risk it.

What happened to that GSD would not have happened if I was there. I have a little tool in my car that my brother gave me so that I could break a window out if I was ever trapped in my car after an accident. I would have unhesitatingly broken out the window and let the GSD out, and if the owner did not like it, he could press charges. I am very good at testifying in court. Very.

My dog(s) stay home in the summer, too. He doesn't like it, but just the fact that he's with me means I can't run any errands or go into a store except for the feed store and tack shop. If I want to stop somewhere else, I can't. I'm also concerned that if my car breaks down or something, we would have to walk home. I take him with me in the winter and late fall, however, and it's amazing how warm the car is on a sunny day, with light coming in the windows. He doesn't have much fur but he's perfectly comfortable being locked in the car in January for a few minutes.

I’m with you. Living in the deep south there’s no excuse and no reason to have one’s dog(s) sitting in the car while errands are run. Leave them at home. They are safe and cool there and will be waiting for family’s return! Hoping that poor GSD survived. People are just selfish and stupid. Why try to “negotiate” temperature? Just leave the animals at home when you can’t take them with you! Good grief!!

I bought an RV van (Class B) for my Border Collie/ Sheltie mix.. Now I can bring him with me when I'm away from home for longer than 5 hrs. Even in 75 degree weather in direct sun the van stays amazingly cool inside.. MUCH cooler than any car.. It has screened windows for cross-ventilation and a roof-top fan that runs on a separate battery. When the temp is over 75 degrees I use the generator.. Regardless if I'm using the fan or the generator, I check on him every 10 minutes.

What I have to worry about is that some overly zealous "do-gooder" might come along, wrongly assess the situation and cause drama that could terrify my super smart and sensitive dog.

I wish Everyone would use common sense.
