Not an instruction. More like advice.

It was not a command or advice. It was basically a statement to protect the Authorities from a lawsuit if Z got hurt while following.

A lawyer obviously came up with this wording.

And then the asked Zimmerman, “What’s he doing now?” Basically, asking him to continue surveillance. So, here is a neighborhood watch guy being given conflicting signals and a suspicious-looking character is slinking around in his (Zimmerman’s) regularly pilfered neighborhood.

I wish O’Mara had played up the dangerous streets of America context that was clearly available to him in this case. Zimmerman, the meek, soft—let’s face it, a not very physically threatening presence, going out on evening patrols to protect his neighborhood. Guy had guts.

Actually, he testified as a witness saying something to the extent they are required to make such a statemet to avoid being responsible for the consequences of asking a civilian to take a certain action, and not just following a person to observe their conduct.
