AG Abbott formally kicks off gubernatorial bid (TEXAS)
Chron ^ | July 14,2013

Abbott, fresh out of law school, was jogging through Houston's River Oaks neighborhood on July 14, 1984, when a 75-foot oak tree suddenly splintered at its base, striking him in the back and partially paralyzing him. Abbott sued the homeowner and a tree company that had worked in the area and collected millions.

He has since become a proponent of limiting civil litigation in Texas and capping the amount of damages that can be awarded. Opponents have called him a hypocrite, but Abbott has largely shrugged off such criticisms. He rarely speaks about his accident, but chose to Sunday.

"Piecing my life back together began with doctors piecing my vertebrae back together," he said, noting physicians inserted rods in his back. "Too often, you hear politicians talk about having a spine of steel. I actually have one."

Abbott has spent months solidifying his right flank, speaking to grass-roots organizations and tea party groups in hopes of making the governor's race a foregone conclusion. Abbott has also been cheered by many in his party for giving tea party firebrand and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz his start when he appointed him solicitor general in 2003.

Abbott promised Sunday to downsize government, set "real spending limits in Austin" and stroked social conservative fires by saying, "Our priorities are wrong when we live in a state that stops a valedictorian from mentioning God but doesn't stop drug cartels crossing our border."

But he's best known for using his office to sue the federal government 27 times during President Barack Obama's tenure, legal battles that have cost Texas at least $2.58 million. The results are decidedly mixed: Five wins, nine losses, nine pending and four where Texas dropped its complaint because of changing circumstances. His chief target was the Environmental Protection

Will Greg Abbott agree to Lincoln-Douglas style debates against Tom Pauken, or is he too scared to confront Pauken face-to-face?

Well, you can't accuse Abbott of being a workaholic, if he admits to being lazy on the job. Vote Greg Abbott for Governor if you want open borders for illegal immigrants in the Lone Star State.

I totally disagree with you. I think he IS the Man for the Job.

He will leave a gaping hole when he leaves the AG office.

When will the debates be scheduled? I’m in China, so I might not be able to watch the Lincoln-Douglas Debates on Live TV. Can a Freeper send me a link that’s not YouTube after a debate is broadcast?

we need to get our texas republicans to quit accumulating so much debt for road construction (we need to either pay more now or quit building). i’d rather pay now.

we also have to find some way to better educate the texas minority population or it won’t matter who we elect in the short run. the numbers are going to drown us folks. i’m not talking about just funding. getting business folks or more individuals involved in tutoring, mentoring etc. they have no role models except for the castro twins.

we need to figure this out now. don’t assume it’s going to stay this way forever.

These are important topics for both Pauken and Abbott to talk about in the soon-to-be-announced Lincoln-Douglas style debates. The Abbott-Rove campaign team had just disclosed they’re not “scared” of Pauken, so let the debates begin. KABOOM!!!

Too bad to deliver the news, but I’m a genuine conservative and while I registered in May, I requested Free Republic administrators grant me confidentiality. To confirm my identity, my password was sent via email, which reveals my identity. So you’re stuck with me as a Freeper, so long as I refrain from using offensive language, engaging in personal attacks, posting photos of Russian women and using racist and violent attacks. All of us Freepers agreed to these rules when posting and so did I. Besides, I lost my FReeper privileges for one week for doing the Russian photos, I won’t mistake again. I learned my lesson.

Judging from your posts, it is possible that you actually are in China. You are not a Texan.

Abbott’s protecting me from Obamacare and from gay marriage. Abbot’s got my vote.
