The CDC has quickly removed a page from their website, which is now cached here, admitting that more than 98 million Americans received one or more doses of polio vaccine within an 8-year span when a proportion of the vaccine was contaminated with a cancer causing polyomavirus called SV40. It has been estimated that 10-30 million Americans could have received an SV40 contaminated dose of the vaccine.

Wow. Did they have a different vaccine? I guess it is possible. Mine is very small and has faded over the years.
What info did you post that you are referring to? I read the article but sort of quickly, I need to re-read it, as one of my children had polio vax in the right time period. The next child I didn’t vax because it didn’t set right with me, although I didn’t know the details that I know now.

Maj Bob Swayne was the Provost Marshal as I recall when we moved there in 64. Don’t know how long he had been there at the time. I do know that the Marines were extending his station indefinitely because he had cancer and the corps saw no reason to transfer him. He died while we were there. A very dedicated handball player. His kids were our age so I know he wasn’t very old.
Do you remember the 3 old big houses that were directly across from the base commander’s quarters? All built about 1900. The one opposite the general’s quarters was ours. Went back about 1999 with my dad before he died and it was still there.

Just read the WIKI on this subject said the OPV(Oral surgar cube) form of this did NOT contain the cancer causing substance. Only the inject-able did(IPV).
I think we all got the same vaccine. For some people it didn't "take".
I suspect mind didn't scar up because I was too terrified to scratch it, after the big horrifying deal my mom made about how grievously I'd be scared for life!!! if I did.
It still itched like fury though...
I definitely would remember something that painful. Nope - never had it.
They used to line us up at the base theater and hit us with that thing. If memory serves it was more painful than the needle. But good for mass production. Although I read somewhere that it was not as sterile as everyone thought at the time.
Dug out my old shot card, amazed that it somehow got saved. Appears that I got the oral 3 times between 56 and 59.

I remember a kid in the neighborhood who got it. Went around on braces and crutches. After awhile she was able to get strong enough not to have either. But she still had a bad limp/gait.
I don’t remember what dose I got, Salk or Sabin.
But to think that this could have caused the cancers later, in all the Baby Boomers....
I’m angry beyond words...

Try living in the South in the summer of 1952.
I had two childhood friends affected. One in an Iron Lung and another with her leg braces and crutches. Many years later I saw her without her braces or crutches. Don’t know if surgery or therapy did the deed.
