I had read (probably from Ayoob's article back in 2012) that Zimmerman's weapon hadn't cycled and had assumed that this was because Martin had a hold of the slide when it was fired. That's why I thought that it was surprising that none of Martin's DNA was found on the weapon. However, it turns out that this was not the case. The weapon had indeed cycled correctly.

The media could not comprehend the whole DA SA technology. The kept harping on it had no external safety. Duh, it’s DA only. They just couldn’t believe he carried a gun that was ready to shoot vs. an expensive paper weight.

From the article:

The take-away is not to avoid such unmeritorious courtroom attacks by carrying a .25 auto with an empty chamber. The take-away is, be able to logically explain your choice of gun and method of carry. The defense did exactly this, to their credit.

American citizen should never have to explain or justify our choices of guns and ammunition, methods of carry, or anything else. I understand persecutors all too frequently turn the tables on us and do their worst to turn the innocent into the criminals, but that ought to be resisted long and hard.
