AUSTRALIANS will go to the polls on September 7, Kevin Rudd has confirmed in an email to supporters.

The Prime Minister informed supporters of the date via email, after visiting Governor-General Quentin Bryce this afternoon.

"A few moments ago I saw the Governor-General and asked that she ... call the Federal Election for September 7," he said.

KEYWORDS:
Under Julia Gillard, Labor was headed to a massive landslide defeat. Rudd is still enjoying something of a honeymoon period, and is promising to spend lots of money we don't have, and appropriating some opposition policies, in an effort to win the next election. I don't think he'll succeed, but it's a genuine fight now. If he does really well, or Tony Abbott makes mistakes, it's not impossible Labor could hold on - but I'd say the odds are 2 to 1 in our favour.

Kev Kardashian is like the old radio giggle, “Chicken man ‘
“He’s Here He’s There he’s Everywhere” but the story is still the same and they just appropriate more of our money to buy the votes of the wannabe welfare class.
Well I believe you get the politicians you deserve and if Australians cant wake up from Celebrity PM we shall be doomed to 3 more years of inept glamour politics whilst the country goes down the gurgler..

The Lucky Country? Our luck just might run out.

He’s probably the most conservative candidate for Prime Minister we’ve ever had. Slightly to the right of John Howard.

That sounds okay to me.
Will Howard endorse Abbott, and does Abbott want Howard's endorsement?

Yes, and yes.

It may not be particularly formal (formal endorsements by previous leaders are not common here), but Abbott was a key member of Howard’s government and Howard is known to support him.

I actually think it will be really close even though some Labor voters I know have sworn that they will never vote for him - still the polls show him doing well - so I wonder who is lying.

Those low information voters who do not understand or appreciate Abbott’s position on abortion and Euthanasia or who fear people of faith are likely to vote for anyone but Abbott. This gives independents more scope to gather votes but sadly brings the Greens into the equation a bit more.

I still think Abbott just needs to not stuff up - I am unsure whether he can go until September without putting his foot in his mouth. For a politician he has an honesty problem - he is too honest!

He is pro-life - but it’s not a current ‘live’ issue in Australian federal politics - it’s a state issue, not a Federal one.

As Health Minister (which he was in the Howard government) he opposed allowing access to RU486 which is under Federal control (pharmaceuticals are controlled by a Federal administration), but Parliament passed laws to remove the Health Ministers power to intervene on those issues.

I think what Melsec was referring to is that people opposed to Tony Abbott have tried to spread a message that he would outlaw abortion in order to try and scare people who don’t want it banned - being quite dishonest as he would not have that power even if he did want to do it. It’s a scare campaign relying on people being ignorant on the difference between matters reserved to the states and federal issues, under the Constitution.

Following up again. Abbott is a devout Roman Catholic (he even spent time as a young man studying for the Priesthood). Despite Catholicism being the single most common religious grouping in Australia, this is enough for some people to try and portray him as some sort of religious extremist.

He’s not. He’s simply a genuine Christian.

So is Kevin Rudd, as it happens (raised Catholic, now Anglican), although Rudd seems more willing to compromise some of his beliefs in order to get elected, and being on the left doesn’t get painted negatively by them for going to Church.

Oh yes - very much so - he is a traditional Catholic - My brother knows him well and says that he is actually a big hearted man with strong religious convictions and a great family man too! If only those traits came across on TV - he always seems so wooden and unfeeling - I have to think so creative editing might be to blame for that somewhat.

Thank-you for clearing up re: abortion and the states - yes it is very dishonest of the Left.

On a completely side issue I am interested see what the 3 imported people “who worked on the Obama campaign” come up with in regards to slogans etc. I think even at the announcement it is obvious that anything the Libs say will be termed as negative politics and not even answered. His line will be “That is negative politics and I will not enter into negative politics” - the ultimate out when you don’t want to discuss what Labor has done wrong.

The biggest danger to Tony Abbott is Tony Abbott. His heart may be in the right place but he doesn’t perform well off the cuff. Sound bites and media snippets count more than depth of policy nowadays, and and KRudd is better at that than Mr Abbott.

Can’t a savy election team just remind your voters what a disaster Mr. Rudd was last time he was PM? And then tie he and his policies to Gillard?
