True that. But Britain also had an overwhelming need to be everywhere, all the time. Part of it was to check the other great powers, but part of it was just imperialistic inertia, we've got one colony in the region, let's go for two...

And there are dangerous parallels to that today. Now it's the US that has an overwhelming need to be everywhere, all the time.

IIRC, Tanganyika was part of a German colony until after WWI. Ironically, the British and Germans had cooperated during the nineteenth century to eliminate the slave trade.
