Invoking Israel, Kerry Says Congress will Vote 'Aye'

John Kerry, the US Secretary of State, said on Sunday that the administration had new evidence that sarin gas was used in an attack by Syrian government forces that killed 1,400 people last month. Kerry also said that he is certain that Congress will approve the attack on Syria, and invoked the name of Israel in this context.

“I can’t contemplate that Congress would turn its back on Israel and Jordan and the allies of the region,” Kerry said on “Fox News Sunday,” saying that lawmakers had a duty to act to uphold international norms against using chemical weapons. Kerry stressed that it was important to send a tough message to other nations pursuing weapons programs, like Iran and North Korea.

Kerry, also sent a warning to Assad, saying that if he were “foolish enough” to harm his people again, then US President Barack Obama might take military action without waiting for Congress.

“Of course the president of the United States knows we have the power to do this, and I assume he would move very, very rapidly,” Kerry said.

Kerry said hair and blood samples from first responders who were helping victims in the Damascus neighborhood of Ghota al Sharkiya “have tested positive for signatures of sarin.” He did not say how the administration had obtained the evidence, but expressed confidence that the case against Assad was “going to build.”

John Kerry wants to be the man to ask the first man to die for a mistake.

Unfortunately, I think he’s right...The Republicans want this war even more than Obama.

I think this can turn either way. Obama is like the kid on the diving board who doesn't have the gonads to jump into the pool. They will do what they always do- wet their finger and put it in the air to see which way the wind is blowing

I only wish I could have seen The Swimmer squirm over this vote after what he did during Iraq.

Obama “knows the shot”.

I don’t think he punts to Congress unless he knew he had the votes.

No, I think he wants an all in approach. He isn’t going to get it. I do think he’ll settle for anything he can get, but I think you’re right that he would want more.

Remember, McCain’s ego is on the line too here.

If some action is taken he can say, see I was right. We needed to take action and we put Assad’s regime on notice.

These two share the same ego in many instances.

McCain never met a war he didn’t like.

There’s another reason to punt this to Congress.

If world opinion has gone against you, and upwards of 90% of your own populace is against you, and you’ve stuck your neck out so far you can’t back down, you punt to Congress to be the goat for you not ‘being able’ to follow through on what you thought was right.

It gets him off the hook. I think that’s all he’s looking for.

As for the comments his staff is making, it’s all geared to depict Obama wanting to take action, and setting up Congress to be the goat.

I think he punts to Congress precisely because he knows he doesn’t have the votes.

We’ll see. I may be wrong here.

Refresh my memory, when the extremist group bombed
the subway with Sarin, did we bomb Tokyo?
I sincerely hope our legislature tells Obama NO!

Our small contingent of troops in Lebanon caused him to trash Reagan. You know, his claimed passer of the golden chalice to himself. As if!

McCain likes taking the opposing position, playing for the long shot that the actions go south, and he can come off as a sage.

Do it often enough and folks will forget every time you got it wrong, and marvel at the sage-like ability to get it right two times out of 100.

He’s the Jean Dixon of politics.

This doesn't get approved IMO.

Every US Senator and HOR Rep is being flooded with calls against it. Every HOR Rep and US Senator will want to give a speech. I wonder if it'll even get to a vote. Keep in mind those folks have to get re-elected and they'll all be better off not casting a vote.

Meanwhile, no legislating gets done and (oh darn) the HOR won't even get around to caving on an immigration bill. Congress will accomplish nothing because Obama wants to cover his *ss.

Is this scenerio possible?

With this crew, whose to say what is possible or not? Seriously.

War is pretty high up there in the scheme of things. I don’t think they can take a pass on an aye/nay vote.

With 90% of the populace saying no, I have a hard time thinking this gets approved. Hell, I believe the populace was stridently opposed to NAFTA, and this illegal alien fiasco is equally opposed to. It wouldn’t say it has reached the 90% level of course, but the will of the people is very clear on this.

We’ll see.

Great point. Your post may me think. If some small rag tag group in Japan can get Sarin gas, it seems to reason Jihadist Rebels can too.

Israel doesn't want anything as half-assed as this 'proposal', Lurch. Swatting the hive weeks after the fact, only to find out the bees have moved everything underground.

But how great is the Schadenfreude of Lurch delivering an almost-presidential sounding summation on Friday morning, and Bobo pulling the rug out from under him 6 hours later. Incroyable!

The Obama administration will go to war to save Muslim citizens, but does anyone believe it would do the same for Israelis?

Both John Kerry and Barack Obama are proven, documented liars.

Not one thing they say can be believed.

Their rhetoric is self serving and based on falsehoods, half-truths and fabrications.
They lie so much and so easily that they themselves do not know fact from fiction.

They are both scum of the earth - and that is on a good day.
