'I don't pay attention to the negative,' Cyrus says in her first comments since Sunday's much-discussed awards show.
"Me and Robin [Thicke,] the whole time said, 'You know we're about to make history right now.'"
In an exclusive clip provided to MTV News by a crew filming a previously announced documentary, Miley Cyrus has addressed, for the first time, reaction to her performance at last Sunday's Video Music Awards.
Cyrus had one goal in mind when she agreed to perform: to give folks something to talk about... not just now, but for years to come.
And so far, it looks like she's accomplished that goal. In the days since the VMAs, her daring performance of "We Can't Stop" has dominated discussion. It's been subject to criticisms and critiques, called "hyper-sexualized," "the nadir of American Civilization," "an exaggerated spectacle meant to subvert pop-culture sexism," and just about everything in between.
Yet, it also drew praise for embodying the signature style and swagger of the VMAs, and for boldly going to places pop has rarely dared. It was a polarizing performance, one that made parents nervous and had pundits' pulses pounding ... yet, also thrilled her fans, inspired no shortage of memorable memes and bested Beyonce's Super Bowl mark for most tweets per minute.
In short, it became a moment, one that instantly told you which side of the generational divide you stood on.
And because of that, "We Can't Stop" may very well be on its way to joining the ranks of other VMA performances that touched nerves, rankled reactionaries and have come to define a time and place in pop: Think Madonna's iconic "Like A Virgin" or Britney's "Oops ... I Did It Again," performances that were strident, defiant and certainly scandalous in context.
But while those stars learned there was a price that came with provocation, Miley isn't about to back down. She did what she came to do, nailed it, and feels great about it.
"What's amazing is I think now, we're three days later and people are still talking about it. They're over thinking it," she says. "You're thinking about it more than I thought about it when I did it. Like, I didn't even think about it 'cause that's just me."
And, to that point, Cyrus isn't going to let her detractors hold her back. She's doing things her way, defining her career on her own terms. After all, though she may be just 20 years old, she certainly knows a thing or two about pop history.
"I don't pay attention to the negative because I've seen this play out so many times," Miley asks, "How many times have we seen this play out in pop music?"
"Madonna's done it. Britney's done it. Every VMA performance, that's what you're looking for; you're wanting to make history."
Pur b.s. My 12 year old grandson said she's a skank. He didn't watch the show but unfortunately saw the video on the internet.
Madonna burst on the stage with some very suggestive performances. Look at her now, after she’s been on the job too long.
Miley may accelerate the process.
Maybe she’ll be a mixed reinterpretation of Madonna and Lindsey Lohan. It could be a real train wreck.
Who does she think she is, John McCain?
“Get thee to a nunnery.”
This is a troubled little girl, very troubled. If you look closely you will see considerable body disfigurement in the form of tattoos, on the hands, the stomach etc. Some of the tattoos have writing in them. These are not good signs. These are signs of a troubled youth.
I see someone in need of psychiatric counseling/medication. Her dance is only a manifestation of mental issues that if unchecked will result in a future mental crash and burn.
Given today's youth, I would expect just the opposite.
That was AWESOME! Thank you for sharing.
She is right. There is no payback in this sexualized culture. It works for them to do this and nothing happens. NOTHING.
They just become more and more famous.
and the querulous just give them more fame.
They think they are edge, and anything that is reactionary proves it to them and their followers.
LOL
As I said, these people don’t think they made a mistake, they think they hit a home run.
Ecclesiastes 1:10 says it all.
Note my screen name...says it all...
FMCDH(BITS)
What was the name of that pop star vixen at the last Super Bowl? She was wearing a dominatrix outfit with shiny sharpened rivets in the usual places. And where did she come by her Aldous Huxley, singing hug me till you drug me, kiss me till Im in a coma, nearly word for word from Huxleys Brave New World? No doubt shed never read a book in her life, much less that one.
Before the collapse, the high-def screens had allowed each watcher to choose from a virtual infinity of customizable fantasies, but there was usually nothing behind those magical glass windows but a plasterboard wall and another stark habitation cubicle built the other way around for the next inhabitant over. Within the dying hive there was no incoming food, fuel, or running water. Not even electricity to move the stale air.
LMAO!
Sending to my husband, who will love it....
sorry MTV - there was no “cultural divide” in our house.
EVERYONE thought it was disgusting.
MTV can try all it wants to rewrite this as just another iconic moment - but here is the problem they have...
other shocking performances by other artists made them “cooler” according to the younger kids.
None such even just took place.
Miley did not just become “cool”. At. All.
Where is the condemnation of Robin Thicke? He is just as disgusting as Miley for that disgraceful performance. Very perverted stuff.
To her it’s just awesome to get all this attention for acting that way (and I can’t say enough about the ridiculous tongue sticking out, ugh). I almost think she’s delusional..
I don’t give a rats @$$ about miley. Best thing is to ignore her. Funny, my 14 year old doesn’t have anything nice to about her and basically ignores her.
FLOL !
Yeah, but his dad was the Dad from "Growing Pains", don'cha know?
